Why grow proso millet (cheena) in Saurashtra?

Proso millet (commonly called cheena in parts of India) is a short-duration, drought-tolerant cereal suited to the light soils and erratic rains of Saurashtra. It fits well into smallholder rotations as a rainfed kharif crop or as an irrigated catch-crop, needs little labour compared with some cereals, and can give a reliable return on marginal lands when managed correctly.

Climate and soil

Proso millet prefers warm, dry climates and matures quickly (typically 60–90 days depending on variety and season). In Saurashtra target the early monsoon window for rainfed crops — sowing with the first dependable rains is important. It does well on sandy to sandy-loam soils with good drainage; waterlogging reduces establishment and increases disease risk. Neutral to slightly alkaline soils common in the region are acceptable, but very acidic soils should be limed.

Varieties and seed sourcing

Choose improved, locally adapted varieties from state seed agencies or your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). Look for varieties bred for:

  • Short duration and uniform maturity (harvest within about 60–90 days)

Fertiliser and nutrient management

Millets are less demanding than maize or paddy but respond to balanced nutrition. Base fertiliser on soil test results where available. As a practical guideline for Saurashtra conditions:

  • N: 20–30 kg/ha (split — part at sowing and the balance as top dress if moisture allows)
  • P2O5: 20–40 kg/ha placed with seed or in the row
  • K2O: Apply if soils are low in potassium — 10–20 kg/ha as a starting point

Apply organic matter when available (farmyard manure or compost) to improve water retention and soil structure on sandy soils. Avoid placing high rates of fertiliser in direct contact with seed on light soils to prevent seedling burn.

Irrigation and moisture management

Proso millet is drought-tolerant and performs well under dry conditions. For rainfed crops rely on timely monsoon rains and conserve moisture through reduced tillage and residue retention. For irrigated crops provide one or two light irrigations during critical stages (early vegetative and just before flowering) if the season is dry — excessive irrigation will encourage excessive vegetative growth and lodging.

Weed control and interculture

Early weed control is important because young millet plants are slow to canopy. Hand weeding or interculture once or twice in the first 3–4 weeks usually suffices. Use row spacing that enables mechanical or manual inter-row weeding where labour is limited. Avoid indiscriminate herbicide use — consult local extension about registered products for millet.

Pests and diseases

Proso millet faces fewer pest problems than many other cereals, but watch for:

  • Shoot flies and stem borers – keep field hygiene, timely sowing, and destroy residues to reduce carryover.
  • Leaf spots and smuts – avoid prolonged leaf wetness, use clean seed, and select tolerant varieties.
  • Birds – in early grain fill, birds can eat panicles; use protective netting, scare tactics or community synchronized sowing to minimize losses.

Harvesting and threshing

Harvest when grains reach physiological maturity — panicles turn brown and grains are hard. Proso millet dries quickly; avoid harvest when grains are too damp to reduce spoilage in storage. Cut panicles with a sickle or use a small combine if available and calibrated for small grains.

Thresh carefully to avoid grain breakage. Traditional beating or small thresher units can be used. Dry the threshed grain to safe moisture content for storage (below 12–13% moisture is a typical safe target for many small grains). Use tarpaulins and clean, well-ventilated drying yards; sun-dry only under hygienic conditions to prevent contamination.

Storage and marketing

Store clean, dry grain in moisture-proof containers or lined bags on raised platforms to reduce rodent and pest problems. Consider simple airtight jute or polypropylene-lined bags, and keep the storage area cool and dry. Marketing outlets include local mandis, bird-seed processors, and value-chain buyers; check demand locally — some buyers prefer specific varieties or grain colours.

Crop rotations and soil health

Use proso millet in rotations with legumes (groundnut, mung) or longer-season cereals to break pest/disease cycles and to improve soil fertility. On sandy soils incorporate organic residues after harvest to rebuild soil organic matter. Minimal tillage and residue retention help conserve moisture and reduce erosion in Saurashtra’s windy environments.

  • Sow early in the monsoon to get the crop established before post-monsoon dry spells.
  • Match seed rate and row spacing to your tools and labour — thin stands are costly in yield, overly dense stands increase lodging risk.
