Why consider teff in Maharashtra?

Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a fine-stemmed cereal valued for its small grains, quick maturity and versatility as grain or fodder. It fits well into light soils, short-season windows and systems where farmers seek an alternative millet or a catch crop between main staples. In Maharashtra, teff can be grown on rainfed uplands or irrigated plots provided attention to seedbed, sowing time and weed control.

Site selection and soil

Choose well-drained loamy to sandy-loam soils with moderate fertility. Teff tolerates pH from mildly acidic to neutral better than heavy alkaline soils. It is not well adapted to waterlogging—avoid low-lying fields that hold water.
