Why consider teff in Meghalaya?

Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a fine-stemmed, small-seeded cereal from East Africa. It adapts to a wide range of soils and can fit into short-season rotations. In Meghalaya’s high-rainfall, humid environment teff can work on well-drained slopes, cleared terrace lands and plots where early-season moisture is reliable. The crop’s short growth cycle and the tiny seed make it well suited to intercropping and relay planting in some systems.

Site and soil requirements

  • Choose fields with good drainage; teff tolerates moisture but not waterlogging. Avoid low-lying, permanently waterlogged plots.
  • Soil pH of 5.5–7.5 is acceptable; very acidic soils should be limed after a soil test.
  • Prepare a fine, firm seedbed: teff seed is tiny and requires a smooth surface for even germination and to prevent birds from capturing seed.

Sowing window and varieties

In Meghalaya’s climate consider sowing teff when the heavy monsoon rains recede and soils are moist but not sodden. This commonly means a post-monsoon to early rabi window (aim for a period when further heavy rains are unlikely). Teff is also possible as a short-cycle crop between two main crops where soil moisture and frost risk are appropriate.

Use locally adapted seed if available. If importing varieties, choose those noted for short duration and disease resistance. Buy certified, cleaned seed to reduce weed and disease introduction.

Seed rate, sowing methods and spacing

  • Seed rate: because teff seed is extremely small, recommended rates are low by weight but high by number. A practical range for growers is about 5–12 kg/ha depending on sowing method. Use the lower end for drill-row sowing and the higher end for broadcasting.
  • Sowing methods:
    • Broadcasting: simple and fast, followed by light harrowing or rolling to cover seed. Expect more uneven stands and higher weed competition.
    • Zero-till or drill sowing: when available, use a fine-seed drill set for a shallow depth (5–10 mm). Drilled rows give better uniformity and easier mechanical weed control.
    • Row spacing: if drilling, rows of 15–25 cm make weeding and harvesting easier.
  • Sowing depth: very shallow. Teff seed germinates best near the surface; burying seed too deep reduces emergence.

Fertility and nutrient management

Do a soil test before fertilising. Teff responds to balanced nutrition; avoid excessive nitrogen which can delay harvest and increase lodging.

  • Baseline approach: apply phosphorus and potash according to soil test results. As a practical starter, many small-grain programmes use a modest basal dressing of P and K then split nitrogen.
  • Nitrogen: split application improves tillering and reduces lodging. Apply a small basal dose at sowing and top-dress once or twice during active vegetative growth.
  • Organic matter: incorporate compost or well-decomposed farmyard manure where available to improve soil structure and moisture holding capacity.

Water management

Teff does not require standing water but benefits from consistent soil moisture during germination and tillering. In Meghalaya, ensure good surface drainage after heavy rains. On sloping lands, contour planting or bunds can help retain moisture while preventing erosion.

Weed control

  • Teff seedlings are small and slow early growth gives weeds an advantage. A fine, clean seedbed and early weed control are critical.
  • Mechanical control: shallow inter-row hoeing or hand weeding within 15–30 days after emergence reduces competition; earlier weeding is more effective.
  • Cultural control: ensure uniform, relatively dense stands to outcompete weeds. Use stale seedbed technique if weed pressure is high.
  • Chemical control: herbicide options are limited; consult local extension for registered products and timings. Avoid herbicides that damage a fine-seeded crop if not labelled specifically for teff.

Pests and diseases to watch for

  • Pests: aphids can appear in dry spells and may spread viruses. Birds can remove seed at sowing—light rolling after sowing and netting small seedbeds can help.
  • Diseases: fungal foliar diseases and smuts can occur in humid climates. Good crop rotation, seed cleaning, and timely fungicide use (when justified and registered) reduce risk.
  • Integrated management: use certified seed, avoid over-dense, nitrogen-rich stands, and monitor regularly so you can act early if pest or disease thresholds are reached.

Growth stages and crop management

  • Germination and early tillering: keep the field weed-free and ensure adequate but not excessive moisture.
  • Stem elongation and heading: watch for lodging—avoid excessive late nitrogen and ensure plants are not waterlogged.
  • Ripening: as panicles mature, start planning harvest to avoid weather damage and seed shatter.

Harvesting

Harvest timing is critical. Teff is ready when most panicles have turned from green to golden and grain is firm. Because seed is small and can shatter, harvest when moisture is low and before heavy rains.

  • Methods: smallholders often use sickles to cut swathes, followed by manual threshing on a tarpaulin. Mechanical combines can be used where available and adjusted for small seeds and low cutting height.
  • Threshing: avoid rough handling that breaks seed; gentle beating or trampling followed by winnowing is common.

Drying and storage

  • Dry grain to safe storage moisture — aim for moisture below about 12% to prevent mould and insect problems. Use sunlight drying on clean floors or raised mats, turning regularly.
  • Cleanliness: remove chaff and weed seeds. Proper cleaning increases market value and shelf life.
  • Storage: store in dry, rodent-proof containers or bags elevated off the floor. Consider using airtight containers with moisture absorbers for longer storage in humid climates.

Processing and value addition

Teff is commonly consumed as whole grain flour (for injera and flatbreads). Milling to flour, packaging in small consumer packs, or creating blended flours for baking can add value. Ensure clean, food-grade processing and clear labelling.

Marketing and selling tips for Meghalaya growers

  • Know your buyers: urban bakeries, health-food shops and ethnic food producers may pay a premium for clean, well-packaged teff flour.
  • Quality matters: clean grain, low moisture and clear packaging get better prices. Small lots sold directly to local markets or online often fetch higher margins than bulk undifferentiated grain.
  • Collective marketing: smallholders can get better access to buyers and better prices by aggregating produce through farmer groups or cooperatives.
  • Certification: if you can meet organic or other niche standards, certificated product lines open higher-value markets—factor in certification costs before committing.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • Poor stands: likely due to deep sowing, crusted soil or bird loss. Remedy with shallower sowing, light rolling and seedbed protection.
  • High weed pressure: practice earlier and more frequent hand-weeding in the first 3–4 weeks; consider row sowing for easier mechanical weeding.
  • Lodging: reduce late nitrogen, avoid over-dense sowing and choose shorter-duration varieties where lodging is a risk.

Final notes

Teff can be a profitable niche crop in Meghalaya when matched to well-drained sites, careful seedbed preparation and timely harvest and post-harvest handling. Start with a small trial plot to learn local timing, pest dynamics and market contacts before scaling up. Work with local extension services or research stations to identify suitable varieties and to confirm inputs and market channels in your area.
