Why consider teff in Jammu & Kashmir?

Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a small-seeded cereal native to East Africa. It is valued for its quick maturity window, forage potential and grain used in flatbreads and porridge. In Jammu & Kashmir teff can be grown as a summer crop in temperate valleys and as a rainy-season crop in lower, warmer belts. It fits well in diversified cropping systems where growers want a low-height, fast-turnaround cereal or an emergency fodder option.

Site selection and climate

Teff prefers warm soil at germination and tolerates a wide range of soils from light sandy to heavy loams, provided drainage is reasonable. In Jammu & Kashmir:
