Why grow lotus in Assam?

Assam’s warm, wet monsoon climate and abundant shallow wetlands make it well suited to lotus (Nelumbo spp.). Farmers and smallholders grow lotus for flowers (temple and ornamental markets), edible seeds (fresh and dried), and rhizomes (fresh market and processing). With the right site, simple inputs and careful water management, lotus can be a reliable low-labour enterprise that fits into wetland mosaics, pond culture and integrated farming systems.

Choose the right variety and end use

Lotus types are usually selected by end use. Know what you want before you plant:

  • Flower varieties: selected for large, showy blooms and long flowering periods. Good for cut-flower markets and temples.
  • Seed varieties: produce large, easy-to-harvest seed heads; seeds are used fresh, roasted or dried for snacks and traditional foods.
