Why grow little millet (kutki) in Tamil Nadu?
Little millet (Panicum sumatrense), called kutki in parts of India, is a short-duration, drought-tolerant cereal well suited to the dry and semi-arid tracts of Tamil Nadu. It fits into rainfed rotations, requires low inputs, and can provide a reliable grain crop on light soils or degraded lands where larger cereals struggle.
Site selection and climate
Choose gently sloping to flat fields with good drainage. Little millet performs best where the crop can avoid waterlogging during rainy spells. It tolerates heat but needs adequate soil moisture for germination and early tillering.
In Tamil Nadu you can grow little millet as:
- Monsoon crop: sown with the south-west or north-east monsoon rains (June–September sowing periods depending on local rainfall pattern).
- Rabi/second season: where supplemental irrigation or residual soil moisture is available.
Soil and land preparation
Little millet grows on a wide range of soils but prefers well-drained loams and light soils. Heavy, poorly drained soils reduce performance.

Treat seed to reduce early damping-off and improve vigour. A simple hot water treatment or seed priming can improve germination under erratic moisture. If treating with a chemical fungicide or insecticide, follow label rates and safety practices.

- Fungal diseases are uncommon in well-drained fields; avoid dense, shaded stands and use clean seed to reduce carryover inoculum.
- Practice crop rotations and remove volunteer millets and grassy weeds to lower pest and disease pressure.
Irrigation and moisture management
Little millet is drought-tolerant but needs moisture during germination and early tillering. In rainfed systems, sow at the onset of reliable rains. If you have access to irrigation, one light irrigation at critical growth stages (establishment and panicle initiation) can improve yields and grain filling.
Growth duration and maturity
Little millet is a short-duration crop; many types mature within a few months from sowing. Monitor panicle colour and grain hardness: harvest when panicles turn golden and grains are hard and difficult to dent with a fingernail.
Harvesting, threshing and drying
- Harvesting can be done by cutting panicles or whole plants when grain moisture is still around 20–25% to avoid shattering. Combine timing with labour availability and weather forecasts.
- Thresh within a day or two of cutting where possible to reduce bird and pest damage. Threshing can be done by beating, trampling, or using a small thresher adapted for small-grain cereals.
- Dry grain to safe storage moisture (generally around 12–14% moisture). Sun-dry on clean platforms or use mechanical dryers if available; protect grain from birds and rodents during drying.
Post-harvest handling and storage
Clean grain by winnowing and grading. Store in clean, dry jute or poly bags off the ground on pallets with good aeration. Use airtight containers or hermetic bags if insect pressure is high. Regularly inspect stored grain for heating or insect activity and manage promptly.
