Why grow giloy in cotton districts?

Giloy is a perennial dioecious climber that can be raised on live supports, trellises or boundary trees, making it compatible with existing cotton-farm infrastructure and with agroforestry or intercropping systems.

Site selection and soil

Choose a well-drained site with good sun exposure (partial to full sun works). Giloy tolerates a range of soils but prefers deep, loamy to sandy-loam soils with good drainage. Avoid waterlogged fields; chronic saturation leads to root rot. pH 6.5–8 is acceptable; if soil is very acidic, lime to adjust.

  • Local herbal traders and aggregators: Common first buyers. Build relationships and deliver consistent quality.
  • Medicinal plants cooperatives or farmer producer organisations (FPOs): Aggregation can improve bargaining power and access to distant buyers.
  • Processors and extract manufacturers: Require higher and consistent quality; may offer contract buying if you can meet standards.
