Variety selection and seed sourcing

There are few commercial teff varieties widely released in India. For Andhra Pradesh, look for seed sources that are adapted to warm, semi-arid to sub-humid conditions and originate from plains rather than high-altitude ecotypes. Key points when choosing seed:

  • Choose well-cleaned, certified seed where available to reduce weed and disease carryover.
  • Prefer shorter-stature types if lodging is a problem on heavier soils.
  • Obtain seed from trustworthy suppliers, millet seed networks, or research stations that have trialled teff under peninsular conditions.
