Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) suits Kongu Nadu’s warm, semi-arid conditions when managed properly. It tolerates a range of soils, fits short-season rotations, and provides food and cash options for small and medium farms. The key is matching variety, planting time and soil management to the local rainfall pattern and irrigation availability.

Site selection and soil requirements

Choose well-drained sites with moderate fertility. Sweet potato performs best on sandy loam to loam soils that do not remain waterlogged. Heavy clay soils or areas with poor drainage increase the risk of root rot and deformed roots.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7) are preferred; very alkaline soils reduce nutrient availability.
  • Soil depth: At least 30–40 cm of friable soil for good tuber expansion.
  • Previous crop: Avoid fields recently planted to other root crops or where nematode pressure is high unless you use clean planting material and rotation.

  • Establishment: Keep soil moist for the first 3–4 weeks until vines root well.
  • Bulking phase: Provide sufficient moisture during tuber formation; fluctuating moisture reduces size and causes splits or secondary roots.
  • Scheduling: In Kongu Nadu’s climates, use light, frequent irrigations rather than deep, infrequent ones on sandy soils. Drip irrigation is efficient and reduces disease risk.

  • Curing: After harvest, cure tubers in a warm (25–30°C), humid place for 4–7 days to heal wounds and improve storage life and sweetness.
  • Storage: Store cured roots in cool, ventilated, dry conditions. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme heat.

Marketing and value addition

Know your market: fresh roots for household consumption, processing (chips, fries), or industrial uses. Sorting by size and quality pays—small tubers often sell at different prices than large ones. Consider local processors or direct sales to vegetable markets for better returns.

Value-add options: simple on-farm processing (washing, grading, drying, crisping) or selling slips and seed material to other growers can diversify income.

Crop rotation and soil health

Rotate sweet potato with cereals, legumes or other non-host crops to reduce pest and disease buildup and to improve soil fertility. Include a legume cover crop or green manure in the rotation to restore organic matter and nitrogen.
