Shea (Vitellaria paradoxa) is traditionally an African tree but has been trialed in various dry and semi-dry tropical regions. For Tamil Nadu farmers, shea offers a long-lived, low-input tree crop that can fit agroforestry and boundary plantings, improve soil cover and diversify farm income through kernels and by-products. Site selection and soil requirements

  • Intercropping: Use short-duration crops (legumes, cereals) between rows during the establishment phase. Stop intercrops several years before the expected bearing phase to reduce competition.

Pest and disease management

Shea shows relative resilience but local pests and fungal problems can occur. Regular field checks and good cultural practices are primary controls.

  • Maintain tree health by avoiding waterlogging and providing good ventilation through proper spacing.
  • Control rodents and fruit predators with sanitation—collect fallen fruits and remove damaged material.

Time to first yield and expected production

Harvest only ripe fruits—overripe fallen fruits are often used in traditional processing. Handle fruits and kernels to preserve fat quality.

  • Collect fruits from the ground or pick carefully to avoid damaging the kernel.
  • Extract kernels by removing pulp and drying kernels to a safe moisture level to prevent mould during storage.
