Why grow pearl millet (bajra) in Assam?

Pearl millet is a hardy millet suited to semi-arid and well-drained areas. In Assam it can be a useful crop on lighter soils, on upland blocks, and in alternate rotations to rice. It requires less water than rice, matures fast, and can fit into the kharif and rabi rotations depending on local rainfall and irrigation.

Site selection and soil

Choose fields with good drainage. Pearl millet tolerates light to medium soils better than waterlogged or heavy clay that holds surface water. Prefer fields with neutral to slightly alkaline pH; acidic soils reduce early growth and can limit response to fertiliser.

Plant nutrition and top dressing

A top dressing of nitrogen at early stem elongation helps ear development. If soils are deficient in micronutrients (zinc, boron), foliar sprays at recommended rates can be effective — confirm need by soil or tissue testing or by observing deficiency symptoms and consulting local advice.

Harvesting: timing and method

Harvest when grain moisture is low and grains are hard; late harvesting risks shattering and bird damage, early harvesting increases drying needs and reduces yield. Typical indicators:

  • Panicles have dried and changed color; grains test hard to bite between teeth.

Know your buyer: local feedmills, poultry farms, human consumption markets and traders all value different grain qualities (size, colour, impurity levels). Practical steps:

  • Grade your grain — separate clean, whole grains from broken or discoloured material; buyers pay premiums for clean lots.
  • Maintain records of variety, sowing and harvest dates and any inputs used — buyers and processors increasingly ask for traceability and quality information.
  • Check local mandi prices before selling. Contact nearby feedmillers, oil mills or traders to compare offers. Bulk buyers may collect from farmgate but negotiate delivery terms and payment timing.
  • Consider collective marketing through farmer groups to achieve better prices and lower transport costs.

Crop rotation and soil health

Rotate pearl millet with legumes or green-manure crops to rebuild soil nitrogen and break pest/disease cycles. After millet, avoid repeating cereals that foster the same pests. Incorporate crop residues to build organic matter, but do so early enough to allow proper decomposition before the next crop.
