Site selection and climate

Choose sites with:

  • Good sunlight — full sun all day for best colour and sugar.

  • Elevation and aspect that limit late spring frost exposure; south- or southeast-facing slopes can warm earlier but increase frost risk, so balance this for your location.

  • Check maturity by taste, soluble solids (if you use a refractometer) and ease of detachment. Do not pull hard; ripe peaches detach with a slight twist.
  • Handle fruit gently to avoid bruising. Use padded bins and work early in the cool morning when possible.
  • Cool fruit quickly after harvest. Commercial cooling and cold storage extend shelf life — store peaches at cool temperatures and moderate humidity to avoid chilling injury and shrivelling. Follow local recommendations for storage times and temperatures.
  • Sort and grade for size, colour and defects. Pack according to buyer specifications to command better prices.

Selling and market options

Multiple channels exist — choose based on scale and season:

  • Local wholesale markets and mandis for volume sales. Maintain good packing, consistent supply and communication with buyers.
  • Direct farm sales, roadside stalls or farmers’ markets can get higher returns for small volumes if presentation and freshness are good.
  • Processors and canneries for lower-grade fruit — drying, canning or jam-making reduces waste and adds value.
  • Explore collective marketing with other growers to negotiate better rates and supply larger orders.

Common challenges and practical solutions

  • Frost damage at flowering: protect vulnerable blocks with windbreaks, delayed pruning (to delay bloom) or active frost protection measures where feasible.
  • Biennial bearing: thin fruit regularly and maintain balanced nutrition to encourage consistent annual crops.
  • Waterlogging or root disease: improve drainage, avoid over-irrigation and remove affected trees early to limit spread.

Peach (Aadoo) can be profitable in Jammu & Kashmir when growers match site selection, variety and management to local conditions. Start small if you are testing a variety or a new management practice, keep records of pruning, fertiliser and spray timings, and coordinate with local extension services or nurseries to source recommended rootstocks and disease-free planting material. Practical attention to canopy light, fruit thinning and postharvest handling will give the best payoff at market.
