Sericulture—growing mulberry and rearing the silkworm—is a suitable enterprise for Nagaland’s smallholders because it can fit into small plots and integrates with home gardens and agroforestry. This guide focuses on practical tasks: site and soil, planting and care of mulberry, leaf harvest scheduling, basic silkworm rearing steps, and post-cocoon handling. It emphasizes practices that work under Nagaland’s climatic conditions: humid summers, monsoon rains and cooler winters in higher elevations.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Choose a site with good sunlight (at least 6 hours daily) and protection from the strongest wind. Mulberry tolerates a range of soils but performs best on well-drained loams with adequate organic matter. Avoid waterlogged depressions that hold stagnant water during the monsoon.
