On the Plateau, success depends on choosing the right sowing window, protecting the crop from late heat, and tailoring irrigation and fertiliser to shallow soils. This guide gives practical steps from land preparation through to selling.

Choosing the right time and variety

Timing is critical. Peas perform best when vegetative and flowering stages avoid high temperatures. On the Deccan Plateau, aim for a winter-season crop. Typical windows:

  • Rabi sowing (preferred): sow from mid-October to early November where frost risk is low; in cooler pockets or higher elevation, sow a bit earlier.
  • Late rabi/early spring: sowing in December can be possible for very early-maturing varieties, but watch for higher disease and insect pressure and early heat.

Select varieties suitable for local conditions: sugar/snap peas or shelling peas if selling fresh markets; short-duration (60–90 days) varieties reduce exposure to end-of-season heat. Use certified seed where possible and ask local extension for varieties proven in your district.

Soil and land preparation

  • Potassium and sulphur as per soil texture and uptake history. Zinc deficiency is common on some Deccan soils; apply zinc sulphate if you observe stunted growth or pale leaves.

Irrigation and water management

Peas need consistent moisture especially from emergence through flowering and pod filling. However, they are sensitive to waterlogging.

  • Irrigation schedule: give a light irrigation after sowing to ensure uniform germination; maintain even moisture during flowering and pod set; reduce irrigation towards maturity to avoid diseases and aid dry down.
  • On shallow soils, smaller, more frequent irrigations prevent stress. Use furrow or drip where possible—drip saves water and keeps foliage drier, reducing disease risk.
  • Avoid heavy irrigation late in the crop which delays maturity or encourages pod rot.

Weed, pest and disease management

Weeds compete strongly at early stages; pests and diseases on the Plateau can include aphids, pod borers, powdery mildew and root rot depending on season and locality. Integrated management works best.

Weed control

  • Keep fields weed-free for the first 4–6 weeks. Use mechanical inter-row cultivations for wider rows; hand weeding may be required in narrow rows.
  • Pre-emergence herbicides are an option on larger farms—follow label and local advice.

Pests

  • Aphids: common in cool snap phases and can transmit viruses. Inspect regularly. Use reflective mulches, early season sprays, or biological controls when threshold levels are reached.
  • Pod borers/caterpillars: monitor with pheromone traps and remove webbed clusters; selective insecticides or biopesticides (Bacillus thuringiensis) can control larvae in early stages.
  • Cutworms/seedling pests: treat seeds or seedbeds if these are known problems in your locality.

Diseases

  • Powdery mildew and downy mildew: reduce humidity with wider spacing and avoid overhead irrigation; resistant varieties help where available.
  • Root rots (Fusarium, Pythium): avoid waterlogging and rotate with non-host crops. Solarization or deep ploughing of infested residues may reduce inoculum in small fields.
  • Seed-borne diseases: use clean seed and consider seed treatment fungicides where disease history suggests risk.

Peas fit well in rotations and with intercrops that do not compete heavily during peak growth:

  • Fresh-market premium: early and high-quality pods fetch better prices. Coordinate with buyers for preferred pod size and packing standards.
  • Bulk sales to processors require consistent quality and regular supply—processors may prefer uniform varieties and specific harvest moisture levels.
  • Value addition: blanching and freezing require infrastructure but give access to urban or export markets; cooperative approaches can help smallholders pool volumes.

Practical risk management

  • Have a backup irrigation plan for dry spells—peas suffer if flowering coincides with drought.
  • Use staggered plantings across a field or village to spread risk from sudden weather events or pest outbreaks and to provide a steady supply to market.
