Why grow sapota in the Rice Bowl?

Sapota (chiku) adapts well to the subtropical and tropical pockets inside India’s rice-producing regions. It tolerates a range of soils, provides year-round shading for field microclimate improvement, and fits into farm enterprise diversification—especially valuable where smallholders seek alternatives to paddy in the long run.

Site selection and climate

  • Climate: Sapota prefers warm, frost-free conditions. Young trees are sensitive to prolonged cold; protect saplings if winter temperatures drop near freezing.
  • Rainfall and irrigation: It does well with 800–2000 mm annual rainfall when drainage is good. In the Rice Bowl, heavy monsoon rains are common—ensure planting sites are not waterlogged and provide supplemental irrigation during dry spells.
  • Soil: Deep, well-drained loamy soils with pH 6.0–8.0 are best. Avoid saline or poorly drained plains; raised beds or mounds can correct temporary waterlogging common after paddy fields.

Training and pruning

  • Formative pruning in the first 3–4 years to develop a strong scaffold and open canopy—reduces shade and improves spray penetration.
  • Annual light pruning after harvest to remove deadwood, water sprouts, and to maintain tree height for easier picking.
  • Avoid heavy pruning during flowering as sapota flowers on new growth; time pruning to promote a flush that will bear fruit at the desired period.

Pest and disease management

  • Pests to watch: sapota seed weevil, mealybugs, scales, aphids, mites and fruit flies. Regular orchard monitoring is essential—use traps and visual checks.
  • Diseases: collar rot and root rot occur in waterlogged soils; powdery mildew and leaf spots appear in humid conditions. Ensure good drainage and sanitation.
  • Integrated approach: prune for aeration, remove and destroy infected plant parts, use biological controls (beneficial insects) where possible, and apply targeted pesticides only after threshold monitoring. For fruit fly, use baiting and field sanitation (collect and destroy fallen fruit).

Intercropping and understorey

Young sapota orchards can be intercropped with short-duration vegetables, pulses or cereals between tree rows until canopy closure. In sodic or saline patches, deep-rooted legumes can help improve soil structure. Maintain plant height and competition control to not stress young trees.

Flowering, fruiting and harvest

  • Sapota flowers and fruits through the year in favourable climates, with peak harvests depending on variety and local seasons.
  • Fruits are harvested when they develop typical colour and a little softness at the stem end. For market transport, harvest slightly early and allow ripening off-tree.
  • Handle fruits gently to avoid skin damage; pack in shallow crates with padding for local markets.

Post-harvest handling

  • Sort and grade for size and defects. Remove any punctured or overripe fruit to reduce spread of infections during transport.
  • Storage: Sapota is climacteric—store at ambient temperatures for short periods or use cool storage (not near freezing) for a few days. Avoid ethylene-producing produce in storage if you want to slow ripening.

Economics and time to bearing

  • Grafted trees can start fruiting in 2–3 years; good yields stabilize after 5–6 years. Mature, well-managed trees can produce substantial fruit—returns depend on local prices, variety and management.
  • Initial investments include planting material, pit preparation, irrigation setup (if drip), and labour for training and pest management. Costs reduce as trees stabilize and inputs focus on maintenance.
