Why grow radish in Haryana?

Radish (Raphanus sativus), locally called mooli, is a fast-maturing, high-turnover vegetable well suited to Haryana’s intensive horticulture systems. It fits small landholdings and can be grown as a relay or intercropped crop in both rabi and spring windows. The crop requires low capital, has short crop cycles and provides regular cash flow when managed right.

Choose the right season

  • Main winter (rabi): sow from September–November for a cool-season crop that develops firm roots and good colour.
  • Spring crop: late January–March sowings give quick returns before summer heat, but watch for bolting as temperatures rise.
  • Avoid late hot season: radish quality collapses with sustained high temperatures — roots split, become fibrous or bolt.

Varieties suited to Haryana

Match variety to market and cropping window. Choose seed from a reputable supplier and test a small plot first.

  • Small round/red types (eg. Cherry Belle-like): quick-maturing (about 25–35 days) for fresh market sale and home consumption.
  • Long white types (mooli): preferred in North India for market demand and quality; maturity ranges 40–60 days depending on the type.
  • Specialty/market types: slender Japanese-type or coloured varieties can fetch premiums in urban markets; ensure you have demand before scaling.

Site selection and soil preparation

Radish prefers well-drained, sandy loam to loam soils with good tilth. Heavy clay soils cause misshapen roots and slow growth.

  • Seed rate: for small round types 3–6 kg/ha; for larger long types 6–10 kg/ha (adjust by method and desired plant population).
  • Spacing: 20–30 cm between rows and 5–10 cm between plants for small types; for long mooli use 30–40 cm row spacing and 10–15 cm plant spacing.
  • Sowing method: seed can be sown in raised beds, ridges or flat beds. For mechanical sowing use calibrated seeders; for hand-sowing, broadcast followed by thinning gives flexible plant populations.
  • Depth: shallow sowing (1–2 cm). Keep seedbed firm to ensure moisture contact.

Irrigation management

Radish needs consistent moisture for even root development. Irregular watering causes cracking, hollowing or woody roots.

  • Establishment: keep surface moist until germination — 7–10 days depending on temperature.
  • Active growth: frequent, light irrigations are better than infrequent heavy ones. Apply enough to keep soil moist to root depth but not waterlogged.
  • Drip or furrow: drip gives best water use efficiency and cleaner roots; furrow or flood can be used with careful scheduling.
  • Reduce irrigation slightly 7–10 days before harvest to improve shelf life and reduce cracking, but avoid severe drought stress.

Nutrient management

Balanced nutrients produce uniform, marketable roots. Avoid over-doing nitrogen late in the cycle, which promotes foliage at the expense of roots.

  • Basal: apply phosphorus and potash based on soil test recommendations; where testing isn’t available, a starter application of single superphosphate and muriate of potash helps root development.
  • Nitrogen: apply moderate doses; split application is effective — part at sowing and the rest as side dressings during active growth.
  • Micronutrients: zinc and boron deficiencies show up in poor root set; include them if local soils are known to be deficient.

Crop protection: pests and diseases

Integrated practices keep inputs low and marketability high.

  • Pests: aphids, flea beetles and cabbage root fly are the common pests. Use row covers at sowing, encourage natural enemies, and use spot-approved insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Diseases: damping-off, downy mildew and root rots can occur in poorly drained soils. Avoid waterlogging, rotate crops, and seed-treat to reduce seedling losses.
  • Weed control: early weeding is vital — radishes don’t compete well with weeds. Use mulches or shallow hoeing; avoid deep cultivation near roots.

  • Bolting (premature flowering): caused by temperature spikes and stress. Sow in proper windows and maintain steady moisture and nutrition.

  • Woody or pithy roots: caused by delayed harvest or excessive heat; harvest on time and choose heat-tolerant varieties for late cycles.

  • Timing: small types 25–40 days; long mooli 40–60 days depending on variety and season.
  • Harvest method: hand pull or use adjustable lifters for mechanised fields. Trim tops to 1–2 cm if required by buyer to reduce moisture loss and handling damage.
  • Cleaning and grading: remove soil gently; avoid scrubbing which scars skin. Grade by size and quality for better market prices.

  • Value addition: bunching clean roots with trimmed tops or offering washed-and-packed radish can command higher prices in urban markets.
  • Stagger plantings in small blocks to supply regularly rather than one large harvest that depresses prices.
