It can be grown successfully on small terraces and family orchards, provides early income compared to many tree crops, and fits well with intercropping or mixed-fruit systems common in the region.

Choose the right site and soil

  • Slope and aspect: Plant peaches on gentle to moderate slopes with good air drainage. East- or south-facing slopes warm earlier in spring, which can be valuable at higher elevations. Avoid frost pockets at valley bottoms where cold air settles.
  • Soil: Peaches prefer well-drained loam to sandy-loam. Heavy clay that remains waterlogged will cause root loss and poor tree vigor. If you only have heavier soils, create raised beds or mounds to improve drainage.
  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH about 6.0–7.0) are ideal. If soils are strongly acidic, liming based on a simple soil test will help.

  • Pests: Watch for aphids, mites, scale and fruit flies. Use pheromone traps for monitoring where available and release beneficials or use selective insecticides when thresholds are exceeded. Bagging fruit in small orchards can reduce damage by birds and fruit flies.
  • Diseases: Brown rot and bacterial shot-hole or spot are the main fungal/bacterial issues. Good sanitation—removing mummified fruits and pruning out infected wood—reduces inoculum. Apply fungicide sprays around bloom and pre-harvest as needed based on local experience and risk.

  • Fruit drop: Natural thinning occurs, but severe drop can be due to stress from drought, excessive crop load, or pests. Improve moisture management and consider pruning to reduce crop load.
