Madurai’s hot, semi-arid climate with long sunny periods suits aloe vera cultivation. The crop tolerates heat, drought and poor soils better than many horticultural crops, requires low labour once established, and has multiple market outlets—fresh leaves to processors, gel sellers, cosmetic units and local herbal shops.

Site and soil requirements

Aloe performs best on well-drained soils. In Madurai, choose sites with:

  • Light to medium-textured soils (sandy loam to loam) to avoid waterlogging.
  • Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Amend very alkaline or acidic soils based on soil test.
  • Good sun exposure; aloe tolerates partial shade but yields and gel quality are highest with full sun.

If your field has heavy clay, prepare raised beds or plant on ridges to improve drainage. Add coarse sand and organic matter during land preparation to improve structure.
