Site selection and climate

Tulsi performs best in warm, frost-free locations with good sunlight. In Maharashtra you can grow it year-round in coastal and lowland zones; in cooler interiors, prefer planting after the last winter chill.

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light shade — 5–7 hours of sun gives best leaf quality.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures; avoid prolonged cold or heavy frost.
  • Monsoon: Heavy, prolonged waterlogging during peak monsoon can cause root rot. Provide raised beds or improved drainage if planting before or during June–September rains.

Regular pruning encourages branching and repeated harvests.

  • Suckering/pruning: Pinch out the apical tips when plants are 20–30 cm tall to encourage bushiness. Remove flowering shoots if the objective is leaf production; allow flowers if harvesting seeds or attracting pollinators.
