Why grow Tulsi in Vidarbha?

  • Dried leaf market: Dry leaves promptly to retain colour and oil. Shade-dry or use low-temperature mechanical driers; avoid sun-drying for long periods which darkens leaves and reduces quality.
  • Essential oil extraction: Harvest at the flowering or early-bloom stage for optimal oil yield and aroma, and deliver to local distillers rapidly to reduce losses.

Curing: For dried leaves, spread thinly in a ventilated, shaded area. Turn leaves periodically to dry evenly. Final moisture should be low enough to prevent mould during storage.

Quality grading

Keep separate lots by harvest date, variety and field to maintain uniformity. Buyers look for bright-coloured, clean leaves free from foreign matter and mould. For essential oil buyers, aroma and cleanliness are important—avoid contamination with other herbs or soil.

Marketing and selling options in Vidarbha

Plan your market before planting. Common channels:

  • Local retail and wholesale markets: Fresh or dried leaf sales to local mandis and vegetable vendors; useful for small, frequent harvests.
  • Ayurvedic processors and herbal traders: These buyers need consistent quality and delivery; contracts or forward agreements help secure prices.
  • Essential oil distillers: Growers can sell green biomass for distillation. Distillers may prefer flowering material and have minimum quantity requirements—coordinate timings and quantities.
