Coastal Andhra has a warm, humid climate and abundant labour, which can work to your advantage if you adapt site selection, shade strategy and crop hygiene to local conditions. This guide focuses on practical steps a smallholder or entrepreneur can take to produce premium tencha suited to culinary and specialty markets.

Choose the right planting material

Matcha-quality tencha comes from small-leaf Camellia sinensis types similar to Japanese cultivars. Key points when sourcing planting material:

  • Prefer small-leaf, sinensis-type clones or cultivars used for Japanese green teas. These give the fine texture and flavour profile desired for tencha.
  • Buy from reputable nurseries and insist on virus-free, true-to-type grafts or rooted cuttings. Seedlings give variable quality.
  • Trial multiple clones on a small block before committing the whole farm. Local trials show how clones react to coastal heat, humidity and soil salinity.

Site selection and soil management

Coastal Andhra presents two main soil challenges: high water table/saline influence near the sea, and alkaline pH. Tencha prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils, so manage the site carefully:

  • Choose gently sloping land with good drainage; avoid tidal flats and areas with known soil salinity.
  • If coastal salinity is an issue, use raised beds (30–50 cm) and improve drainage with organic matter and coarse sand in the planting row.
  • Test soil pH and nutrients. Tea favours acidic conditions; if pH is above 6.5, apply elemental sulphur or acidifying compost and increase organic mulches. Work in amendments before planting.

Tencha production requires dense, regularly pruned canopies and prolonged shading before harvest:

  • Planting spacing: common practical spacing is 1.0–1.2 m between rows and 0.5–0.8 m within row for high-density hedgerow systems that facilitate frequent plucking and pruning.
  • Pruning: establish a two-tier pruning system. First-year formative pruning to create a bushy canopy; thereafter, maintain a pluckable height (about 60–80 cm) with light shearing every 6–12 months. Prune to promote multiple shoots and a uniform top canopy.

  • Tea mosquito bug and mirids—cause shoot damage and deformity. Monitor with yellow sticky traps and remove heavily infested shoots. Encourage natural enemies and use selective insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Thrips and leafhoppers—cause silvering and browning. Prevent outbreaks by maintaining canopy hygiene and avoiding excessive nitrogen before harvest.
  • Mites—often build up in dry spells. Spray miticides only where economic thresholds are met and consider predatory mites where available.
  • Scales and aphids—manage with horticultural oils, neem-based products and parasitoid encouragement.

Fungal and bacterial problems

  • Blister blight and grey blight: limit humidity by ensuring good airflow, remove diseased shoots, avoid overhead irrigation, and apply copper or biological fungicides as part of a rotation if disease pressure is high.
  • Sooty mould secondary to sap-sucking pests: control the underlying pest rather than treating the mould alone.

Practical IPM steps

  • Sanitation: remove prunings and fallen leaves to reduce inoculum.
  • Monitoring: routine scouting and simple traps to detect early pest build-up.
  • Biologicals: neem, Beauveria bassiana (where registered), and Bacillus thuringiensis for caterpillars; use selectively to preserve beneficials.

Harvesting for Tencha

Harvest technique determines tencha quality more than many other factors. The objective is clean, young, unbruised leaves.

  • Pluck the top two leaves and bud when shoots are tender. Harvest frequency in a high-quality block is often every 7–12 days during flush periods.
  • Shade the plants for 20–30 days immediately before the harvest intended for tencha; sustained shading increases theanine and umami flavours.
  • Handle leaves gently—avoid bruising and contamination with soil or dust. Transport promptly to the processing area.

On-farm processing to Tencha

Tencha processing differs from typical green teas because leaves are steamed (not pan-fired), then de-veined and de-stemmed and dried without rolling, to preserve colour and texture.

  • Steaming: Immediately after plucking, steam leaves to halt oxidation. Short, consistent steam bursts are used to preserve fresh green colour.
  • Cooling and drying: Cool steamed leaves quickly, then dry gently to reduce moisture to a stable level while avoiding overheating.
  • De-stemming and de-veining: Mechanically or by hand remove central veins and stems to produce the soft leaf mass called tencha. This step is essential—stems cause bitterness and prevent fine grinding.
  • Storage: Store tencha in airtight, cool, low-oxygen conditions before grinding to preserve colour and aroma.
  • Grinding to matcha: Traditionally done on stone mills to avoid heat build-up. Small-scale stone grinding is available commercially; consider contract grinding if volumes are small.

Quality control and food-safety

  • Maintain clean processing areas and food-safe equipment. For culinary markets, documentation and traceability are increasingly important.
  • Test finished product for moisture, microbial load and any residues needed for export or high-end domestic buyers.

Profit tips and market approach

Tencha and matcha command a premium, but quality and branding are what buyers pay for. Practical commercial tips:

  • Start with small, high-quality lots for chefs, tea bars and specialty stores. A few well-documented batches that demonstrate consistent colour and flavour will open doors.
  • Consider direct-to-chef sales, craft beverage producers and health-food markets; these buyers value freshness, traceability and unique terroir stories.
  • Value addition: offer both tencha and finished stone-ground matcha; contract out grinding if you cannot justify the equipment investment.
  • Certifications: organic, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and food-safety schemes can increase market access but carry costs—evaluate buyer requirements first.
  • Recordkeeping: track harvest dates, shade periods, clone, pest treatments and processing steps. Buyers of high-end matcha expect traceability and consistent quality.

Start small, test, scale

Tencha production is labour- and knowledge-intensive. Begin with a pilot block, master shading and processing, and build relationships with buyers before expanding. Local trials will show how your chosen clones react to coastal heat, humidity and soil. With good hygiene, strict pre-harvest rules and careful processing you can produce a distinctive Andhra tencha that meets specialty-market expectations.
