Why silkworm farming in Jammu & Kashmir?

Jammu & Kashmir has pockets of climate and soil that suit mulberry (Morus spp.) and Bombyx mori rearing. Cooler summers, distinct seasons and availability of irrigated land in valleys are advantages. Smallholder farmers and cooperatives can add value by producing cocoons for local silk units or integrating sericulture with orchard/smallholder systems.

Choose the right mulberry variety

Mulberry leaf quality drives cocoon quality. For Jammu & Kashmir, select varieties adapted to cooler climates, with vigorous growth, good leaf yield and palatability for silkworms. Common practical recommendations:

  • Dry or store cocoons under recommended conditions if not processed immediately—avoid damp storage that can spoil silk.
  • If the goal is to produce seed (eggs), keep a portion of healthy cocoons un-stifled for moth emergence and controlled mating.

  • Form producer groups or cooperatives to aggregate supply, negotiate better prices and access technical support.

Seasonal calendar and local adjustments
