Why grow sarpagandha in Meghalaya?

Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia spp.) is a perennial medicinal herb valued for its alkaloids used in traditional medicine. Meghalaya’s cool, humid climate and well-drained, loamy soils allow successful cultivation when you follow location-specific practices. This guide focuses on practical steps smallholders and growers can apply on slopes, terrace gardens and small plots.

Site selection and climate

  • Choose a site with dappled sunlight to partial shade. Plants perform well with 40–60% shade in hotter valleys; full sun on cooler, higher-elevation sites can work if soil moisture is steady.
  • Altitude: sarpagandha can be grown across the Khasi and Jaintia hill ranges if frost is absent. Avoid cold pockets with frequent light frosts.
  • Drainage: the crop dislikes waterlogging. Prefer gentle slopes or raised beds to keep roots aerated during Meghalaya’s heavy monsoon rains.
