Why foxtail millet (kangni) in Mizoram?
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica), locally called kangni, is a short-duration, drought-tolerant cereal suited to Mizoram’s sloping farms and rainfed systems. It fits in mixed cropping, small terraces and shifting cultivation rotations, provides quick harvests between rice crops or on fallow patches, and offers a nutritious grain for household consumption and local markets.
Choose the right site and soil
Foxtail millet performs well on light- to medium-textured soils with decent drainage. In Mizoram, choose gently sloping terraces, levelled benches or other sites with reduced erosion risk. Weed management is critical in the first 4–6 weeks. Manual weeding or hand-hoeing between rows is the most available practice in Mizoram. Timely weed control until the crop canopy develops prevents major yield loss. In mixtures or relay systems, plan for wider spacing to allow manual weeding. Mulching with straw or green manure reduces weed pressure and conserves moisture.

Post-harvest drying and storage
Dry grains to safe moisture levels before storage; inadequate drying invites stored-grain pests and mould. Store in clean, dry containers or jute sacks with insect-proofing measures—sun-drying and sun exposure of empty bags helps reduce pests. Consider simple on-farm storage improvements such as raised platforms, rodent proofing and airtight tins for seed kept for planting.
Crop uses and marketing
Foxtail millet is versatile: use it as whole grain, roasted, ground into flour for porridge and local dishes. Local markets and niche health-food demand are growing; aggregated smallholder supply or direct linkages to local millers increases value. Keep quality high—clean, well-dried grain fetches better prices.
