Cotton districts often have soils and climates that suit cashew: moderate to low rainfall spells, well-drained soils, and farmers familiar with tree crops and mechanised land preparation. Cashew brings long-term income, soil cover and diversification away from a single cash crop. But it’s a tree crop with different timing, labour needs and marketing compared with cotton.

Site selection and soil

  • Topography: Choose gently sloping land to avoid waterlogging. Cashew tolerates shallow soils but performs best on deep, well-drained soils.
  • Soil type: Sandy loam to lateritic soils with good drainage are ideal. Avoid black clay soils prone to standing water.
  • pH and fertility: Neutral to slightly acidic soils are fine. Conduct a soil test to guide fertilizer and lime needs.

Variety and planting material

Use grafted or budded planting material from a trusted nursery. Improved hybrids/grafted varieties begin bearing earlier, give more uniform nuts and are easier to manage than seedling trees. Inspect nursery plants for healthy root systems, a clear graft union, and absence of pests or diseases.

Harvesting and on-farm processing

Track per-tree performance, pest incidents and interventions to refine practices year-to-year. Use small pilot plots before converting large cotton acreage to trees to test local performance and market channels.

  • Protect young plants from grazing and accidental herbicide spray—mark tree lines and coordinate with neighbouring cotton fields when applying chemicals.
