Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) can be a profitable tree crop for parts of the Indus Valley where summers are long and dry and soils drain well. This guide focuses on field-proven, pragmatic steps: selecting site and variety, planting, managing water and nutrition, dealing with pests and diseases, harvesting, primary processing and simple marketing strategies tailored to growers in Sindh and southern Punjab.

Climate and Soil Requirements

  • Climate: Cashew prefers hot, humid to semi-arid climates with a distinct dry season for flowering. It tolerates high temperatures but young trees need protection from cold spells and frost.
  • Rainfall: Annual rainfall between 600–1200 mm is suitable; however, in parts of the Indus Valley where rainfall is lower, reliable supplemental irrigation during establishment and nut fill improves yields.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy loam to red soils are best. Cashew tolerates poor, shallow soils but performs poorly in waterlogged or heavy clay soils. pH 5.0–6.5 is ideal; lime acid soils if pH is below 5.0.

Variety Selection

  • Direct sale to processors: Larger farms can contract with shelling units or processors—this often yields better prices but requires consistent, quality supply.
  • Value addition: If you can safely partner with certified shellers, selling kernels instead of raw nuts increases returns. Don’t attempt to produce kernels without proper equipment and safety procedures due to toxic cashew nut shell liquid.

Cashew is a medium-term to long-term investment: trees take several years to begin bearing commercially, with yields increasing over time.
