Why grow amla in Nagaland?

Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) is a hardy, long-lived tree valued for its fruit used fresh, preserved and in herbal preparations. Nagaland’s hilly terrain and warm-to-mild climate support amla provided you select good sites and follow basic cultural practices. Amla can fit into smallholder systems — as a home orchard tree, agroforestry component or orchard crop for commercial planting.

Site and soil requirements

  • Altitude and climate: Amla tolerates a wide range of conditions but does best in subtropical to warm-temperate zones. In Nagaland choose south- to southeast-facing slopes at lower to mid elevations where frost risk is low.

Before scaling up, survey local demand for fresh fruit and processing markets. Value addition (drying, preserves, herbal extracts) can improve returns and reduce seasonal price risk. Establish links with processors or cooperatives, and consider collective marketing for small growers.
