Climate and best sowing window

Turnips prefer cool conditions for good root development and mild days to prevent bolting. On the Deccan Plateau sowing is usually done in the post-monsoon/early winter window:

  • NPK guideline (adjust to soil): 40–60 kg N, 40–60 kg P2O5, 40–50 kg K2O per hectare. Apply half N and full P at sowing, remaining N as a top-dress at 3–4 true leaves.
  • Micronutrients: zinc and boron can matter on deficient soils—use foliar sprays if leaves show deficiency symptoms.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen late in the crop or you will get lush leaves and poor root bulking.

Irrigation and water management

Consistent moisture is key to uniform, non-lumpy roots. Turnips are shallow-rooted and need regular light irrigations:

  • Give a pre-sowing irrigation if soil is dry so seed can germinate quickly.
  • Frequency: every 7–10 days in cool dry weather; shorten interval in very sandy soils. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Reduce irrigation 10–14 days before planned harvest to increase keeping quality and reduce cracking.

Weed management

Young turnip plants are poor competitors. Control early weeds to avoid yield losses:

  • Use stale seedbed technique—light irrigate and kill weed flush before sowing.

  • Baby turnips: 25–35 days after sowing when roots are 2–3 cm across.
  • Standard market roots: 45–70 days depending on variety and growing conditions.
  • Pull by hand or lift with a fork to avoid bruising. Cut tops leaving 1–2 cm stem for better shelf life if selling roots only.
  • Leafy greens: harvest earlier and handle carefully, cool quickly to maintain freshness.

  • Packaging: small bunches tied with a leaf or elastic often sell better at retail markets. For wholesale, crate roots by size and avoid mixing damaged produce.
  • Value addition: wash-and-pack baby turnips or pre-cut greens for restaurants can fetch a premium if you can ensure quality and food safety.
  • Local demand: talk to traders and retailers before planting to set expected pack sizes and price targets. Use local WhatsApp groups or co-ops to coordinate supply.

Crop rotation and sustainability
