Introduction

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa), often called rajnigandha, is a high-value cut flower and source of aromatic oil. In the Indus Valley, with a warm climate and extended growing season, tuberose can be a profitable crop when you match variety, planting time and crop care to local conditions. This guide focuses on practical steps and field-ready advice.

Varieties suited to the region

  • Single-flowered types: Popular in domestic markets for long spikes and large flowers. Good for cut-flower production and room fragrance.
  • Double-flowered types: Compact clusters of fragrant blooms suited to pot plants and local flower markets.
  • Early, mid and late season types: Choose a mix to spread harvests and market supply. Early types shorten time to first harvest; late types extend production.

Choose local, tried tuberose ecotypes or certified planting material from reputable nurseries. Bulb health is the single most important factor for success.

Climate and site selection

  • Planting time: In much of the Indus Valley, tuberose is planted at the end of winter to early spring so bulbs establish before the hottest months. In warmer pockets a late autumn planting is also practiced to take advantage of cooler winter flowering.
  • Plant bulbs with the neck just below soil level; cover with 3–5 cm of soil. Deeper planting delays sprouting.

Irrigation and water management

  • Establishment: Keep soil evenly moist until shoots are well established. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Growth and flowering: Moderate irrigation promotes strong stems; reduce water slightly as flowers form to improve vase life.
  • Drainage: If using flood irrigation, ensure beds and field slope drain excess water away from bulbs.

Nutrients and fertilizers

Base fertilizer and organic matter at land preparation. A balanced approach through the season improves yield and flower quality:

  • Basal: Well-rotted farmyard manure or compost incorporated before planting.
  • Nitrogen: Apply moderate N split between early growth and pre-bulb development. Excess N produces leafy growth at the cost of flowers.
  • Phosphorus and potassium: Support root and flowering; apply based on soil test or standard local recommendations.
  • Micronutrients: Watch for deficiencies (e.g., boron, zinc) on symptom appearance; correct with foliar feeds when necessary.

Mulching, staking and crop management

  • Mulch with straw or plastic film to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Thin plants or tie weak stems if wind or heavy blooms cause lodging; use supports for long-spiked varieties in exposed locations.
  • Remove side shoots and spent flowers to focus plant energy into quality spikes and bulb development.

Pest and disease management

  • Common pests: Thrips, bulb mites and stem borers can be problems. Monitor regularly and use targeted controls—biological options first where possible and insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Diseases: Bulb rot and fungal wilt occur in poorly drained soils or with infected planting material. Use disease-free bulbs, crop rotations and fungicide seed treatments if needed.
  • Sanitation: Remove and destroy heavily infested or diseased plants. Clean tools and avoid replanting in the same spot if rot has been present.

Harvesting and postharvest handling

  • Harvest spikes for the market when 2–3 lower florets have opened—this gives the buyer good vase life while allowing stems to be mature.
  • Cut in the cool part of the day and place stems immediately in clean water with a light bleach dip if possible to reduce microbial load.
  • Remove excess foliage and grade stems by length and bloom stage. Pack stems in bundles and keep cool and shaded during transport.
  • Bulb lifting: Lift bulbs when foliage dies back or at season end for sale/processing. Cure bulbs in shade on dry racks for a week before storage.

Yield and cropping systems

Tuberose is commonly grown as an annual or a multi-year crop. With good bulbs and care, you can harvest multiple spikes from a clump over the season. Many growers practice staggered planting or successive plantings to ensure continuous supply to markets.

Storage and replanting of bulbs

  • Clean and sort bulbs after lifting; discard small, diseased or damaged ones.
  • Store in dry, ventilated sheds at moderate temperatures. Avoid high humidity to prevent rot.
  • Replant healthy offsets in the next recommended season; refresh planting material from reliable sources periodically to maintain vigour.

Marketing and value addition

  • Local markets and florists value long, clean stems and strong fragrance. Grade accordingly.
  • Consider value addition: potted tuberose for urban buyers, essential oil extraction where quantities justify processing, and bunching for wedding/temple markets.
  • Timing: Match harvest volumes to festival periods and wedding seasons in your region for better prices.
