This guide focuses on practical steps that work on small farms in Tripura rather than theory.

Which yam species and varieties to consider

In the region, gardeners and growers commonly work with a few species. Choose based on market preference, culinary use and available seed tubers.

  • Dioscorea alata (greater or water yam): common and adaptable, some varieties have purple flesh. Tubers can be large and fetch good prices in markets that prefer smooth, firm tubers.
  • Dioscorea esculenta (lesser yam): shorter growing cycle, easier to handle, good for kitchen gardens and quick turnover.
  • Dioscorea opposita/ D. polystachya (Chinese yam): sometimes grown as a minor crop; check local markets before planting.
