Why grow sweet potato in West Bengal?

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is well-suited to many parts of West Bengal because it tolerates a range of soils, provides a quick-return root crop, and can fit into rotations with paddy and maize. It’s useful for household food security and market supply when you match variety, planting date and management to local conditions.

Choose the right season and site

In West Bengal you can grow sweet potato in two main windows: a spring-summer crop and a kharif/monsoon crop. Choose based on your local rainfall, irrigation and market timing.

  • Spring-summer window: Plant after the main winter period when soil warms and there is less flood risk. This gives relatively early harvest before monsoon harms tubers.
  • Kharif/monsoon window: Plant timed to benefit from monsoon moisture if fields drain well and you can control standing water.

Site selection: pick well-drained fields with a moderate slope or raised beds to avoid waterlogging. Avoid heavy saline patches and poorly aerated subsoils.

Soil and land preparation

Sweet potato grows best on light to medium-textured soils — sandy loam to loam are ideal. Soil pH between 5.5 and 6.8 is acceptable. Heavy clay and waterlogged soils lower yield and increase rot problems.

  • In monsoon-prone zones use raised beds, ridges or shallow drains to prevent standing water.

Weed, pest and disease management

Early weed control is critical because vines later shade out weeds. Use a combination of manual weeding, shallow cultivation and mulches.

Common pests and problems to watch for:

  • Pests: Sweet potato weevil and storage pests are important where they occur — inspect planting material and rotate away from infested fields. Leaf-feeding caterpillars and aphids may appear; treat if economic thresholds are reached.
  • Diseases: Viral infections, stem rot and root rot are common where hygiene and drainage are poor. Avoid infected planting material, practice crop rotation and remove diseased plants promptly.
  • Integrated pest management (IPM): monitor regularly, encourage natural enemies, use resistant varieties where available, keep fields free of volunteer plants and rotate with non-host crops.

Vine management and topping

Some farmers trim vines to manage disease or encourage tuber bulking. Topping at about 45–60 days after planting can help concentrate growth into tubers but must be practiced according to variety and local advice.

  • Use hand tools or forks to lift carefully and avoid bruising or cutting tubers — damaged tubers store poorly and rot quickly.
  • Handle gently and avoid piling tubers too high; excessive pressure causes internal damage.

Post-harvest handling and storage

Proper curing and storage extend shelf life and improve skin set. Immediately after harvest, allow tubers to air-dry in shade for a few hours to stop sweating, then cure if possible.

  • Curing: Keep tubers at warm (around 25–30°C) and humid conditions for 4–7 days to heal surface wounds and thicken skin.
  • Storage: Store in cool, well-ventilated, dry places. Avoid low temperatures that cause chilling injury and avoid high humidity that promotes rot.
  • Sort by size and quality for market; damaged tubers should be used locally or processed quickly.

Marketing and value-added options

Identify your market before planting: fresh markets often prefer specific tuber sizes and appearance; processors may require uniform size and specific flesh colour. Consider simple value-addition: chips, drying or selling slips to other farmers.

Crop rotation and sustainability

Rotate sweet potato with cereals and legumes to reduce pest and disease build-up and to benefit soil health. Maintain good field hygiene, use organic matter to sustain soil structure, and test soils periodically to adjust fertiliser use.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using infected or poor-quality slips — this spreads viruses and reduces yield.
  • Planting in waterlogged or heavy clay soils without improving drainage.
  • Over-applying nitrogen which promotes vines over tubers.
  • Rough handling at harvest that bruises tubers and reduces storage life.
