Introduction

Stingless bees (often called dammer or dammar in parts of India) are small social bees in the genus Tetragonula that suit small-scale farmers and agroforestry systems in the Western Ghats. They are non-aggressive, pollinate many native and cultivated crops, and produce a distinctive aromatic honey and propolis-like resins. This guide focuses on practical steps you can apply on-farm: selecting colonies, hive construction and placement, colony management, floral resources, health and harvesting.

Which bees to keep

In the Western Ghats the local stingless bees you will encounter typically belong to the Tetragonula group. These are adapted to humid tropical conditions and to native forest and multi-crop landscapes. Before buying or moving colonies, confirm the species with a local extension worker, university entomologist or experienced meliponiculturist to avoid moving non-local genotypes across landscapes.

Why keep stingless bees on your farm?

  • Pollination benefits for native trees, medicinal plants, vegetables and small-fruit crops.
  • Low risk to people and livestock because the bees do not sting.
  • Small-space beekeeping: hives fit under shade trees, near houses or inside agroforestry plots.
  • Products: honey with unique flavour, cerumen (wax-resin), and propolis-like extracts used locally.

Simple hive options

Use simple, robust hives that replicate the bees’ natural nest cavities. Two practical types are commonly used:

  • Log hives — Hollowed logs with a single small entrance. Use durable hardwoods, seal joints to prevent ants and rain entry, and provide a removable top or side panel for inspection.
  • Box hives — Wooden boxes with internal partitions and a narrow entrance tube (about 1–1.5 cm). Boxes are easier to handle and move; use untreated wood and a tight-fitting lid.

Ensure the entrance is small and positioned low on the front, as stingless bees prefer low, ground-to-mid-height entrances. Provide a landing platform as a small slat or cup at the entrance to help foragers orient.

Site selection and placement

  • Place hives under shade — filtered light like the understorey of shade trees is ideal. Avoid full sun and heavy rain exposure.
  • Choose positions where predators are limited and proximity to crops and native flora is good (within 300–500 m of major floral resources if possible).
  • Mount hives 0.5–2 m above the ground on posts or shelves to reduce ant access and moisture issues.
  • Avoid areas with strong prevailing winds and heavy pesticide drift. Keep hives at least one field away from insecticide-sprayed crops.

Capturing and establishing colonies

There are three common ways to acquire colonies:

  • Catch wild swarms — Look for bees entering natural cavities or abandoned log nests. Transfer the combs into your prepared hive with minimal disturbance.
  • Buy nucleus colonies — Purchase from reputable local meliponiculturists. Ask for healthy, queen-right colonies and transport them gently.
  • Translocate whole nests — If legally and ethically permitted, move an entire small natural nest into a box hive.

When establishing, minimize opening the nest. Place the new hive in the selected site and allow the bees to orient for several days before performing inspections.

Colony management and inspections

Stingless bee management is low-maintenance but requires regular checks for at least the first year.

  • Inspect every 3–6 weeks during the active season. Look for: active foraging at the entrance, healthy brood pattern (sealed brood cells), and clean combs.
  • Avoid heavy-handed inspections. Open only one small panel for quick checks to prevent chilling brood and stressing the colony.
  • Monitor for pests: ants, cockroaches, and house lizards can be a nuisance. Use physical barriers (sticky ant bands, grease, metal collars) and maintain dry, clean hive stands.
  • If you find small hive beetles or other unfamiliar pests, isolate the hive and seek local expert advice—do not apply agricultural insecticides inside nests.

Feeding and nutrition

Stingless bees rely on local flowers for nectar and pollen. Supplementary feeding is rarely needed but can help when floral resources are scarce (dry season or before swarming):

  • Give small amounts of 1:1 sugar syrup in shallow feeders placed near the entrance—only as a short-term measure.
  • Provide local pollen substitutes only if you know what you are doing; poor-quality supplements can harm colonies.
  • Prioritise planting or conserving continuous bloom sources: native trees, fruit trees, and understory plants that flower across seasons.

Floral resources to support colonies in the Western Ghats

Maintain diversity. Stingless bees are generalist foragers but do best with a mosaic of native and cultivated plants. Useful plants include:

  • Native forest trees and shrubs that flower at different times of year.
  • Fruit trees such as mango, jackfruit, banana and small fruits—many attract stingless bees.
  • Understory herbs and shade-grown crops (cardamom, pepper) that provide pollen and nectar continuity.

Keep hedgerows and margin strips of flowering plants to bridge gaps between major bloom periods.

Reproduction and colony division

Stingless bees reproduce by nest fission rather than large swarms. Experienced keepers can perform splits to increase colony numbers:

  • Only split strong, healthy colonies. Transfer part of the brood comb and food stores into a prepared hive with some workers and ideally a young queen or queen cell.
  • Splits should be done when floral resources are abundant so both halves can gather quickly.
  • Monitor splits closely for acceptance and growth over the next 4–8 weeks.

Pests, diseases and general problems

  • Ants: the most common issue — use physical barriers, keep the area clean and raise hives off wet ground.
  • Moisture and mould: ensure hive ventilation and avoid water entry during monsoon. Replace severely moulded combs conservatively and support colony health.
  • Human disturbance: protect from curious children and livestock; place signage if needed.
  • Never use agricultural insecticides inside hives. If a poison incident occurs, move unaffected colonies away and consult local authorities.

Harvesting honey and other products

Stingless bee honey is stored in small wax-resin pots and differs in flavour and consistency from Apis honey. Harvest conservatively:

  • Harvest only small portions (10–30% of stores), leaving enough for the colony to survive lean periods.
  • Use sterile tools and clean jars. Remove honey pots gently and close the hole quickly to avoid robbing or exposure to pests.
  • Store honey in airtight containers in cool conditions. Cerumen and resin comb can be collected for local medicinal or craft uses.

Legal and ethical considerations

Follow local regulations about moving wild colonies. Avoid overharvesting and respect community resource rights. Buy colonies from local breeders when possible to support regional genetic stock and livelihoods.

Marketing and income opportunities

Local markets value stingless bee honey for its distinctive taste and local medicinal associations. Consider small-batch packaging, direct sales to neighbours and agro-tourism demonstrations. Selling pollination services is possible but typically more relevant for larger operations integrating many hives into orchards and plantations.
