Why consider hops in Saurashtra?

Hops (Humulus lupulus) are a specialty crop used mainly by breweries for bittering and aroma. Saurashtra’s hot, semi-arid climate is not the classic cool, long-day environment most hops prefer, but small-scale, irrigated production is possible when you match varieties, microclimate, and management. Grow hops only after a site assessment and a business plan — hops are labour- and structure-intensive and take at least 2–3 years to reach steady production.

Site selection and microclimate

  • Microclimate: Choose sites with the coolest possible nights and good air movement. Avoid frost pockets and hot reflective surfaces. A site close to surface water for irrigation is a big advantage.
  • Aspect and shade: Hops need long daylight, but extreme midday heat stresses the crop. East- or north-facing rows (or partial shade nets on hottest afternoons) can reduce heat stress.
  • Soil: Hops prefer deep, well-drained loams with good organic matter and pH 6.0–7.5. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clays without adequate drainage.
  • Water table and drainage: Good drainage is essential. Plan drainage channels or raised beds if necessary.

  • Packing: Vacuum-pack or nitrogen-flush sealed bags to protect from oxygen and light. Use food-grade barriers and label with variety, harvest date and storage lot.
  • Storage: Store cool and dark—best is refrigerated or frozen for long-term. At room temperatures, alpha and aroma degrade more rapidly.

Quality testing

For sales to breweries you will be expected to provide basic analysis: moisture content, alpha acid percentage, and possibly essential oil profile. Small growers can arrange testing through regional labs or brewery partners. Keep traceable records of field blocks and post-harvest handling for each batch.

Marketing and selling your hops

Hops are a niche market. Typical buyers include craft breweries, contract processors, maltsters, and brokers. Start marketing well before first commercial harvest.

  • Build relationships with local breweries: Offer small trial lots to brewers. Be transparent about varietal characteristics and batch variability, especially in early years.
  • Contracts and forward sales: Consider forward contracts to reduce market risk, but read quality and delivery clauses carefully.
  • Direct sales: Sell by weight and provide lab results or sensory notes. Prepare small sample packs and clear labels.
  • Value addition: Drying, pelletising and packaging add value but require investment and quality control. Work with a contract processor if you don’t have on-farm facilities.
  • Certification and traceability: Organic or identity-preserved lots may fetch premiums, but certification demands strict record-keeping and input control.

Economics and scaling considerations

Hops require high initial capital for trellis, irrigation and post-harvest processing. Labour needs are intense at training and harvest. Start with a pilot block to learn local performance and quality before scaling. Keep detailed cost records so you can evaluate per-kilogram production costs, break-even points and market prices from your buyers.

  • Trial small plots and different varieties first — learn how local heat and irrigation affect quality.
  • Invest in a robust trellis—failures are costly and disrupt production for years.
  • Keep irrigation uniform and avoid overhead watering during cone ripening to reduce disease and preserve oils.
  • Set up a simple drying area before harvest so you can process the first crop correctly.
  • Document seed/clone source, planting date, inputs, and post-harvest handling for each lot — buyers care about provenance.
