Why grow wine grapes in Indore?

Indore and surrounding Malwa plateau have hot summers, a marked monsoon and mild winters. These conditions can suit grape production if you match variety choice, rootstock and vineyard management to the local climate. This guide focuses on practical decisions for smallholders and commercial plots: how to site, plant, train and protect vines for good fruit quality and consistent yield.

Variety selection—what to plant

Choose varieties by market (table grapes vs wine), heat tolerance and disease resistance. For growers near Indore aiming at wine or juice, consider both traditional Vitis vinifera wine types and tolerant cultivars used in India.

  • Chenin Blanc – widely used in Indian wineries, adapts to warm climates and can make crisp white wines when acidity is managed.
  • Shiraz (Syrah) and Cabernet Sauvignon – popular red wine varieties. They need full sun and careful canopy management to avoid overripening in very hot spells.
  • Thompson Seedless (Sultanina) – primarily a table grape but also used for dried fruit and some juice; hardy and commonly available planting material.
