Why sorghum around Bhopal?

Sorghum (jowar) is one of the most reliable cereals for the Bhopal region because it tolerates heat and intermittent moisture and fits well into Kharif rotations after pulses or oilseeds. With the right variety and field management you can grow sorghum for grain, fodder or dual-purpose use while keeping input costs moderate.

Climate and soil requirements

  • Climate: Sorghum performs well in the hot, semi-arid to sub-humid conditions around Bhopal. Main sowing is in the Kharif (June–July) just after monsoon onset. Short-duration types also allow limited rabi sowing where irrigation is available.
  • Soil: It prefers well-drained loam to sandy-loam soils but will grow on heavier clay if drainage is acceptable. Avoid waterlogged fields. Soil pH 6.0–8.0 is acceptable.

Choosing varieties

Choose varieties that match your end use (grain, fodder or dual purpose), maturity window and water availability. Two practical approaches:

  • Apply 40–60 kg nitrogen (N) per hectare for grain sorghum. For hybrids and higher-yield targets, rates toward the upper end may be justified.
  • Apply 20–40 kg P2O5 (phosphorus) per hectare at sowing. Phosphorus is important for early vigour and rooting.
  • Apply 0–20 kg K2O (potash) per hectare depending on soil K status; many central Indian soils have adequate native potassium but check with a test.
  • Split N: apply half at sowing or 10–12 days after emergence with the remainder at tillering/early vegetative stage. For moisture-limited fields avoid late heavy N that encourages lush growth and pests.
  • Use farmyard manure or compost (2–4 t/ha) in the rotation to maintain soil structure and organic matter.

Irrigation and moisture management

  • Most sorghum in the Bhopal area is rainfed. Maintain weed control to conserve soil moisture early on.
  • Critical stages for moisture are: seedling establishment (first 3–4 weeks), tillering, booting/flowering and grain filling. If you have irrigation, try to supply water at these stages rather than a constant schedule.
  • Avoid waterlogging; sorghum tolerates short dry spells but prolonged saturation will reduce stands and increase disease risk.

Weed, pest and disease management

Integrated management gives the best economic returns.

  • Weeds: Inter-row cultivation, timely manual weeding or a recommended pre-emergence herbicide within label instructions. Keep the first 4–6 weeks weed-free to protect tiller development.
  • Shoot fly and stem borer: Sow timely to escape peak pest flights, use resistant/tolerant varieties when available, and destroy stubbles to reduce carryover. Use pheromone traps and biological controls as advised by your KVK. Chemical control should follow action thresholds and label directions.
  • Leaf diseases and grain mold: Avoid excessive planting density and ensure good air circulation. Use clean, certified seed and practice crop rotation. Fungicides or biofungicides may be needed where disease pressure is high—follow local extension guidance.
  • Striga (witchweed): If present in your area, practice crop rotation and use clean seed; early weeding and trap crops reduce seed bank over time.

Plant protection practical actions

  • Scout fields weekly during the first two months and at flowering to detect early pest build-up.
  • Keep records of pest occurrences and yields so you can refine timing and interventions next season.
  • Work with local pesticide dealers and KVK scientists to choose registered products and safe application rates if chemical control is necessary.

Harvesting and post-harvest

  • Harvest timing: For grain, harvest when grain moisture is about 18–20% and the panicle has turned mature and tough. For fodder, cut at the desired green stage; first cut is usually 60–75 days for some varieties.
  • Harvest method: Manual cutting with sickles is common; mechanical combines are used where available and economical. Avoid heavy shattering by harvesting promptly once mature.
  • Drying: Dry harvested panicles in the sun until grain moisture is 12–14% before threshing and storage. Ensure good aeration when sun-drying to avoid heating and mould.
  • Storage: Store grains in clean, dry, insect-free bags/tanks. Use proper fumigation or improved storage structures if insects are a recurring problem. For seed storage keep samples separately and in cooler, drier conditions.

Rotation and soil health

Rotate sorghum with legumes (pigeonpea, chickpea, or soybean) or oilseeds to break pest and disease cycles and improve soil nitrogen. Maintain residue management—leave stubble where practicable to reduce wind erosion and feed soil organic matter, or incorporate as green manure where needed.
