Is growing black truffle in Kerala realistic?

Kerala is tropical, hot and humid for much of the year, so commercial truffle farming is higher risk here than in temperate zones.

That said, growers in tropical regions have explored truffle production using microclimate selection (higher elevations in the Western Ghats), heavy soil amendment (to raise pH and drainage), shade management and strict irrigation schedules. Consider truffle cultivation in Kerala only after assessing site-specific conditions and being prepared for a multi-year trial with no guaranteed payoff.

Which truffle species to consider

  • Tuber melanosporum (Périgord or black winter truffle): highest market value, prefers cool winters and alkaline soils. The usual target where conditions are near-temperate.
