Variety selection

Choose varieties that tolerate heat, produce good sugar-acid balance and are available as disease-resistant or locally adapted clones. Common choices in warm Indian climates include:

  • Thompson Seedless (Sultana) – widely available and easy to grow; used for table and raisin but also sometimes for white wine blending when properly managed.
  • Bangalore Blue – darker-skinned, adaptable and used for table and some local winemaking trials.
  • Flame Seedless and other red/black table types – used experimentally for rosé or blended wines when sugar and acidity are managed.
  • Trial promising wine cultivars (Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Colombard) only after confirming availability of suitable planting material and local nursery support.

  • Sorting: remove sunburned, rotten or unripe clusters immediately after harvest to avoid spoilage.
  • Transport and storage: rapid cooling and prompt delivery to the winery preserves fruit quality. For table markets, cold storage and careful packing are needed; for winemaking, deliver quickly to fermentation facilities.

Plan vineyard blocks in sizes that match your ability to manage labour-intensive tasks and coordinate harvest and processing.

  • Plant during the cooler months (post-monsoon to early winter) to reduce transplant shock.
