Why grow giloy in Himachal?

Giloy (Tinospora spp.) is a climbing medicinal creeper valued for its stems and roots. In Himachal Pradesh its adaptability to subtropical to lower temperate belts, demand from herbal processors and compatibility with multi-story farming make it a useful niche crop for smallholders. This guide focuses on practical steps that work on terraces and small holdings in Himachal’s varied elevations.

Know your site and climate

Giloy thrives in warm, humid to sub-humid conditions and tolerates partial shade. In Himachal it performs best in foothill and mid-hill zones (roughly up to 1,200–1,500 m ASL) where frosts are rare. Key considerations:

  • Exposure: East- or north-facing slopes with some shade reduce heat stress; avoid exposed ridges with strong winter frosts.
  • Temperature: Young plants dislike prolonged cold below freezing; choose sheltered sites or grow under shade netting in cooler pockets.
  • Soil: Well-drained loams with good organic matter; avoid waterlogged soils common in terraced bottom areas.
  • Water: Requires regular moisture during establishment and dry-season growth; good drainage and irrigation access are critical.

  • Spacing: 2–3 m between plants along the row and 3–4 m between rows is common; adjust based on trellis design and expected stem growth.
  • Trellis: Use single-wire, T-bar or pole-and-wire systems about 2–2.5 m high. Vines will twine and can be trained for easy access.

  • Method: Cut mature stems close to the main stem using clean tools. For continuous supply, employ staggered harvesting of different vines.
  • Post-harvest: Clean stems, remove side branches, and if required, sun-dry or shade-dry according to buyer specifications. Store in dry, ventilated conditions to prevent mould.

  • Dry and pack stems or process into coarse chips for longer shelf life, following buyer specifications.
