Why grow elephant foot yam (suran) in Jammu & Kashmir?

Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus spp.), locally called suran, is a high-value tuber crop that fits well into diversified hill and valley farming systems. It gives good returns on invested labour, stores in field for months after physiological maturity, and suits mixed cropping or block plantings. In Jammu & Kashmir, the crop can be grown in low-lying valley soils and in protected gardens in milder hill sites when frost risk is managed.

Best varieties for the region

Commercially available varieties differ by corm size, number of offshoots, skin thickness and maturity span. For Jammu & Kashmir, choose varieties with:

  • Shorter dormancy and early bulking if you want an annual crop.
  • Better tolerance to cooler nights and lighter frost.

  • Common pests include tuber-feeding grubs, rodents, and occasionally aphids on foliage. Monitor plants regularly.
