Why grow elephant foot yam (suran) around Indore?

Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus spp.; commonly called suran or jimikand) fits well into smallholder and commercial systems around Indore because it tolerates a wide range of soils, uses the monsoon effectively, can be stored in the ground as a reserve crop, and has good local market demand for fresh tubers and processing. With simple management improvements you can lift yields and reduce losses.

Climate and soil in Indore: what to target

Indore lies in central India with a hot summer, a concentrated monsoon (July–September) and a mild winter. Elephant foot yam grows best where summers are warm and the monsoon supplies the main water. Choose sites with:

  • Deep, well-drained soils (loam to sandy loam preferred). Heavy, poorly drained soils increase risk of rot.
  • pH in the mildly acidic to neutral range (about 6–7.5).
  • A sheltered position to reduce wind damage to emerging shoots.

Varieties and how to choose seed material

  • Apply well-decomposed FYM or compost at planting. Organic matter improves tuber quality and reduces rot risk.
  • Apply phosphorus and potassium as a basal dose according to soil test; nitrogen is commonly applied in split doses during active growth.
  • Micronutrients such as zinc and boron can be limiting in some soils—use them based on deficiency symptoms or soil test results.
  • Avoid excess nitrogen late in the season (it can encourage soft tissue and rot close to harvest).

Irrigation and water management

Make irrigation decisions around phenology and soil moisture:

  • Rely on monsoon rainfall for the main bulking period where possible. In dry years or in well-drained soils provide supplemental irrigation to maintain steady growth.
  • Reduce irrigation as plants approach dormancy to harden the corms and lower rot incidence.
  • Drip irrigation can increase water use efficiency and reduce foliage wetting—beneficial in higher-value plantings.

Crop management and intercrops

  • Weeding: keep rows weed-free for the first 60–90 days. Mulching with straw or black plastic conserves moisture and suppresses weeds.
  • Staking is not needed; remove broken or damaged shoots promptly.
  • Intercropping: short-duration legumes in the first 6–8 weeks can fit between rows without competing heavily, and they add nitrogen and ground cover. Avoid tall, competitive intercrops that shade the yam too early.

Pests and diseases — practical control

Common issues around Indore and practical responses:

  • Soft rot and bacterial/ fungal rots: the biggest single risk. Reduce incidence by using healthy seed, avoiding waterlogging, applying organic matter, ensuring good drainage and maintaining field hygiene. Seed treatment with biological agents such as Trichoderma and hot water treatment methods (follow extension protocols) can reduce pathogens.
  • Nematodes: root-knot nematodes affect some plantings. Crop rotation, organic amendments and tolerant varieties (if available) help. Test soils if you suspect nematodes.
  • Rodents and porcupines: protect seed plots and newly planted fields with physical barriers or traps; keep field edges clean to reduce shelter for pests.
