Delta districts often offer the humid climate, alluvial soils and irrigation options suitable for elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius), commonly called suran. Site and soil requirements

Key soil and site points to check before planting:

  • Soil type: Deep loams to sandy loams with good organic matter are ideal. Heavy clays can be used if improved, but poor internal drainage must be corrected.
  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0) is best. Acidic soils below pH 5 need liming based on soil test.
  • Drainage: Natural or formed beds should drain freely. Standing water or prolonged saturation leads to tuber rot and poor emergence.

  • Basal application: Apply well-rotted FYM or compost as indicated earlier. Add a balanced NPK at planting based on soil fertility—common smallholder practice is 50–80 kg N, 40–60 kg P2O5 and 60–80 kg K2O per hectare split over the season.
  • Split doses: Apply a portion of nitrogen and full phosphorus at planting; top-dress nitrogen and potassium during active growth (4–6 weeks and again at 8–10 weeks after emergence).
  • Micronutrients: Zinc and boron deficiencies show up in poor growth; apply based on tissue tests or foliar sprays if deficiency symptoms appear.

Weed, pest and disease management
