Why grow colocasia in Uttarakhand?

Colocasia (arbi, taro) is well suited to Uttarakhand’s Terai and lower to mid-hill zones. It tolerates wet soils, responds well to organic manuring and provides both corms for market and leafy greens for household use. With sensible land and input management it fits smallholder rotations and can be intercropped or grown on bunds and terraces.

Where it performs best

Colocasia grows from near sea level up to roughly 900–1,200 m in Uttarakhand. The best zones are:

  • Terai and Bhabar lowlands: deep, moist soils and longer warm season give good yields.
  • Lower hills and gentle terraces: choose sheltered plots with good moisture retention and protection from cold winds.

Avoid exposed high-altitude sites where frost and low temperatures slow growth and damage foliage.

  • Use a balanced NPK program; a typical range for growers is about 80–120 kg nitrogen (N), 40–60 kg phosphorus (P2O5) and 60–80 kg potassium (K2O) per hectare applied in split doses. Adjust rates based on soil tests if available.
  • Split N: apply one-third at planting, one-third at 45 days and the remainder at 90 days. Apply full P and half K at planting; top-dress remaining K mid-season if required.
  • Micronutrients: zinc and boron deficiencies occur on some soils; apply based on symptoms or soil testing. Foliar sprays can correct shortfalls quickly.

Irrigation and water management

Colocasia requires consistent moisture. In rainfall-dependent systems, plant with the early monsoon. For irrigated fields:

  • Keep soil uniformly moist; avoid long dry spells which suppress corm bulking and leafy growth.
  • The crop tolerates temporary waterlogging and can be grown in ponded conditions, but stagnant water in heavy clay for long periods can cause corm rot—provide some drainage if standing water remains for weeks.
  • In terrace systems, direct irrigation to maintain moist topsoil without causing erosion.

Intercropping and rotations

Colocasia fits well in smallholder systems:

  • Intercrop with quick-growing vegetables or legumes in the first 1–2 months to optimise land use.
  • Rotate with pulses or cereals to reduce disease build-up and to improve soil fertility via legumes.

Pest and disease management

Monitor and manage common issues with scouting and cultural controls first—chemical inputs only when necessary.

  • Pests: taro/taro beetles and root-knot nematodes can attack corms; earthing-up and removing infested plants reduces spread. Aphids and caterpillars feed on leaves; use neem-based sprays or approved insecticides if thresholds are exceeded.
  • Diseases: Phytophthora and Pythium corm rots occur in waterlogged, poorly drained soils—ensure good planting material and avoid prolonged waterlogging. Leaf blights and bacterial leaf spot can appear in humid conditions; remove diseased debris and improve air circulation.

Colocasia is typically ready for harvest 7–10 months after planting depending on variety and climate. Indicators of maturity:

  • Foliage begins to yellow and die back.
  • Side corms are well developed and firm.

Harvest carefully to avoid cutting corms; wash off soil and grade for market. In some systems foliage is harvested several times for greens before corm maturity.

Post-harvest handling and storage

Fresh corms are perishable and bruising shortens shelf life. Practical steps:

  • Curing: dry and shade-cure freshly harvested corms for a few days to toughen skins and reduce rot.
  • Storage: keep in cool, well-ventilated, slightly humid conditions; avoid frost and direct sun. Short-term storage on-farm is possible in ventilated pits with dry sawdust or straw.
  • Processing options: washing, grading and selling to local markets or processing into chips or flour (where facilities exist) extends market opportunities.

Marketing and value addition

Local demand for corms and leaves exists in hill towns and urban markets. To improve returns:

  • Sell early to traders when market prices are higher, or bulk and supply to wholesalers for larger volumes.
  • Clean and grade your produce—uniform, clean corms fetch better prices.
  • Explore value addition like peeled-and-packed corms, chips or frozen greens if you have access to processing or collection centres.

  • Source planting material from healthy mother plants or certified suppliers where available; clean, disease-free seed makes the biggest difference.
