Which Acacia to grow in Gujarat?

  • Vachellia/V. nilotica (babul): locally adapted, used for poles, tannin, and fodder. Suitable on heavier soils and saline sites; coppices well.
  • Acacia catechu (khair): valued for catechu and hardwood; does well on well-drained soils and is used in agroforestry systems.
  • Acacia auriculiformis / A. mangium (where rainfall allows): faster-growing for timber and fuelwood on higher-rainfall pockets—note these need more moisture.
  • Prosopis juliflora (mesquite): widely present in Gujarat; drought-hardy but invasive—use with caution and local clearance rules.
