With the right site, cultivar choice and vineyard management, small commercial blocks for wine grapes are very feasible.

Variety selection

Select varieties that are proven for heat tolerance, disease resistance and desired wine style. Common wine grape groups to consider:

  • Red cultivars: Shiraz/Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache (heat-tolerant types)
  • White cultivars: Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Colombard

Yields vary with variety, vine age, trellis and management. Young vines produce little in the first 2–3 years; commercial yields build after that. Focus first on producing high-quality fruit that matches buyers’ specifications rather than maximizing tonnes per hectare—quality often commands better prices for wine grapes.

Costs to budget for include trellis and establishment, irrigation, labour for pruning and harvest, pest/disease management and transport. Spread establishment costs over several years when calculating per-year profitability.

Post-harvest handling and selling

Quality-conscious buyers and wineries expect clean, undamaged fruit delivered at the right maturity. Practical selling routes:

  • Contract supply to wineries — negotiate ripeness targets, price schedules and quality clauses.
  • Direct sales to local co-operatives or aggregators who collect fruit from multiple growers.
  • Value addition: small-scale raisin-making, juice or table grape sales are alternatives but require different practices and markets.

Invest in simple post-harvest hygiene: clean crates, shaded handling, and short transport times. If storing before delivery, use cool storage where feasible to maintain freshness.

Record-keeping and continuous improvement

Keep block-level records of variety, rootstock, planting date, pruning load, yields, pest incidents, sprays and irrigation schedules. This practical knowledge is what will let you refine pruning, crop load and irrigation to improve quality and reduce costs over time.

  • Start small and expand after 3–4 seasons once you have stable quality and a reliable market.
