Why consider tencha in Guntur?

With the right site selection, shade systems and post-harvest logistics you can produce high‑quality tencha suitable for premium markets.

Site, soil and climate

Choose the coolest available micro-site: north or east-facing gentle slopes, areas with partial shade and good wind protection. Tencha-quality tea benefits from cooler, moist conditions—so where possible use higher elevation pockets or farms with groundwater-supported irrigation.

Soil: well-drained loamy to clay-loam soils with good organic matter are best. Avoid waterlogged or very sandy soils. Correct pH to the 5.5–6.5 range before planting using organic amendments where possible.

Matcha/tencha commands a premium but buyers demand consistency and traceability. Options for growers:

  • Contract with specialty tea processors or matcha manufacturers who can handle final milling and packaging.
  • Develop a farm-branded product line—this requires investment in processing, packaging, quality testing and marketing.
  • Target local premium markets (cafés, restaurants, health-food retailers) and explore export markets through established exporters.

Key selling points that buyers look for: sensory quality (color, aroma, umami), lab tests for contaminants, consistent supply and clear harvest/processing records. Organic certification or Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification can add value but require upfront work and documentation.

  • Do a small-scale pilot first: test shading duration, clones and processing steps before expanding.
  • Processing proximity matters: steam quickly after plucking; long transport times reduce quality.
  • Invest in training for pluckers and processing staff—the skill in picking and steaming affects final quality more than many inputs.
  • Monitor leaf chemistry if possible (simple sensory panels and color assessment help). Aim for bright green leaves with sweet, umami notes.
  • Be realistic about climate: lowland heat in Guntur may limit the best quality compared with cool highlands; shading and irrigation mitigate but do not fully replicate cool-climate benefits.
