Why consider tencha (matcha) in Madhya Pradesh?

Tencha is the steamed, de-veined leaf that is milled into matcha powder. Globally, matcha commands premium prices but requires specific pre-harvest and processing steps: extended shading, steaming to halt oxidation, careful drying and removal of stems/veins, then fine milling. Madhya Pradesh is not a traditional tea belt, but pockets with higher elevation, access to irrigation and shade infrastructure can produce specialty green tea if you follow practical, trial-driven steps.

Site selection and soil

  • Topography: choose higher and well-drained sites where temperature extremes are moderated—valley bottoms that flood are unsuitable.
  • Soil: tea prefers acidic, friable soils with good organic matter. Aim to improve local soils with compost and green manures rather than expecting an ideal pH. Conduct a local soil test to guide lime or sulphur use.
  • Water: reliable water is crucial during establishment and dry spells. Drip or micro-sprinkler irrigation helps maintain even moisture without waterlogging.

Cultivar choices and planting

Matcha-quality leaves come from cultivars selected for fine, tender shoots, good shade response and low bitterness. Japanese cultivars such as Yabukita, Samidori and Okumidori are commonly used in matcha production. If these are unavailable, consult with reputable tea nurseries or research stations for cultivars proven to perform under warm-temperate to subtropical conditions.

  • Nursery: source healthy grafted/budded plants or certified seedlings. Establish a small on-farm nursery so you can acclimatize planting material and avoid transporting long distances.
  • Spacing: for specialty tencha consider denser spacing than commodity tea because you will be managing the bush to produce tender flushes—common practice is roughly 0.9–1.2 m between plants within rows and similar between rows, but adjust to local conditions and pruning system.
  • Planting time: aim to plant before the monsoon so roots establish with the rainy season; supplemental irrigation will be needed for off-season planting.

Shade management (critical)

Shade management is the single most important production practice that differentiates tencha from ordinary green tea:

  • Intensity: reduces sunlight to promote higher chlorophyll and theanine and lower catechins, producing the desired umami and bright green color. In Japan, shade nets can reduce light by around 60–90% for 2–4 weeks before harvest. In Madhya Pradesh’s hotter sun, you may need stronger shade and careful monitoring for heat stress.
  • Methods: temporary shade nets (black or woven polyethylene) are the most practical for small growers. Permanent shade crops (like banana or fast-growing trees) can work but may complicate management and increase pests.
  • Timing: start shading 2–4 weeks before the intended harvest to achieve the biochemical changes associated with tencha leaf quality.

Pruning and crop management

  • Pruning: maintain a low, dense bush profile to favour young flushes. Implement formative pruning in the first 2–3 years, then light maintenance pruning annually or biannually depending on growth vigor.
  • Fertiliser: prefer balanced nutrient inputs—organic matter, compost and targeted N applications to support tender leaf growth. Over-fertilising with nitrogen can lead to excessive vegetative growth and increased pest pressure.
  • Harvesting: hand-pluck the top two leaves and a bud for the highest quality. Plan harvests to coincide with the shaded window for tencha production.

Pest and disease management

Tea in non-traditional areas will still attract common tea pests; integrated pest management (IPM) is the safest, economically sensible approach.

  • Likely pests: tea mosquito bug (Helopeltis spp.), red spider mites, stem borers and caterpillars. Monitor regularly—early detection keeps control costs low.
  • Diseases: blister blight and root rot can be problems where humidity and drainage are poorly managed. Maintain airflow and avoid overhead irrigation during humid periods.
  • Control tactics: use pheromone traps where applicable, encourage parasitoids and predators through hedgerows, remove severely affected material, and select low-toxicity products only when thresholds are exceeded. Follow label instructions and pre-harvest intervals strictly—matcha is consumed as a whole-leaf powder, so residues are a major concern.

Processing: turning tencha into matcha

  • Immediate handling: process leaves quickly after harvest. For tencha you must steam freshly plucked leaves promptly to halt oxidation. Steaming times vary by leaf age and equipment—small-scale producers commonly use short, high-temperature steam bursts.
  • De-veining: after steaming and gentle cooling, leaves are air-dried and then stems and veins removed. This step is labor-intensive; manual or mechanical destemming lines are available but require investment.
  • Drying: dry to stable moisture content without over-roasting the leaf—the green color must be preserved.
  • Milling: tencha is milled into matcha using stone mills for premium product; industrial ball mills exist for larger volumes but can raise temperature and affect color and flavor. If you cannot mill yourself, plan logistics to send tencha quickly to a trusted mill that understands matcha quality requirements.
  • Food safety: cleanliness at every step is non-negotiable. Matcha is consumed whole, so microbial and chemical residues must be controlled. Keep drying and milling areas hygienic and control humidity to prevent mould.

Marketing and profitability tips

  • Start small: conduct a pilot block (e.g., 0.1–0.5 ha) to refine shading, harvest timing and processing before scaling up.
  • Differentiate: focus on quality attributes—shade-grown, single-origin, stone-ground—and document them. Buyers of specialty tea pay for traceability and consistent quality.
  • Value chain: most premium is captured at finished, packaged matcha rather than raw tencha. If you lack milling capacity, partner with an established mill or co-op that can help you reach specialty markets.
  • Certifications and food-safety: organic or food-safety certifications can command price premiums but require strict record-keeping and investment. Assess the market demand locally and for export before investing.
  • Customer channels: direct sales to cafes, boutique retailers, online specialty food platforms and tea sommeliers yield higher margins than commodity buyers. Offer tastings and small retail packs to build brand recognition.

Practical checklist to get started

  • Visit existing tea producers (if possible) and study their shade systems and processing lines.
  • Obtain a small batch of matcha-suited planting material and establish a test block with shade netting capable of 60–90% light reduction.
  • Set up a simple, hygienic steaming and drying area and arrange milling options before your first harvest.
  • Monitor pests weekly and apply IPM principles; avoid broad-spectrum chemistry close to harvest.
  • Keep detailed records of inputs, harvest dates, shading duration and processing parameters—these will be invaluable for replicating success and selling the story to buyers.

Producing tencha and matcha in Madhya Pradesh is feasible with careful site selection, disciplined shade management, hygienic processing and realistic market planning. Expect a learning curve—start with small experiments, focus on quality, and build relationships with specialty buyers and trusted processors before scaling. The premium for authentic, well-made matcha can be attractive, but it is earned through consistency and attention to food-safety at every step.
