Why Tencha for Krishna Godavari?

Tencha is the shaded green tea leaf used to make matcha. The Krishna Godavari (KG) coastal plain and adjacent uplands have warm humid conditions, with a distinct monsoon and mild winters—conditions that can support camellia sinensis cultivation if you manage shade, irrigation and leaf quality. Tencha requires deliberate agronomy (shade, plucking standards, low oxidation) and post‑harvest handling; if you can control those, you can enter a high‑value niche market.

Site Selection and Soil

Pick gently sloping land with good drainage. Heavy waterlogging causes root diseases; very sandy soils need organic matter to hold nutrients. Ideal features include:

  • pH lightly acidic to neutral—aim 5.5–6.5 where possible; use organic amendments to adjust.
  • Good access to water for irrigation during dry months and to apply foliar feeds during shading.
  • Wind protection—young bushes and shaded canopies are sensitive to strong coastal winds.

Variety Selection

Matcha quality comes from genetics plus cultural practice. For India, choose varieties bred for green tea and shaded production, or experiment with Chinese/Japanese clones where available through nurseries. Consider:

  • Local teas with high leaf tenderness and low fibre—these process to smoother tencha.
  • Clonal material known for high chlorophyll and amino acid (theanine) content—ask regional nurseries about clones suited to shaded culture.
  • Planting material health—buy disease‑free certified plants to avoid root rot and viral problems.

Planting and Spacing

Common spacings for small‑leaf, high‑density tencha bushes are closer than orthodox tea: rows 1–1.5 m apart and plants 0.6–1.0 m within rows, allowing for pruning and mechanised movement where used. Maintain a head height comfortable for plucking (often under 1 m for matcha production) and a dense canopy to respond well to shading.

Shade Management

Shade is the defining cultural input for tencha. It increases theanine and chlorophyll, reduces bitterness and stimulates tender new shoots.

  • Timing: Apply shade for the 2–4 weeks before harvest for single‑flush teas. Longer shading (3–4 weeks) enhances the umami flavors desired in tencha.
  • Shade materials: Use traditional rice‑straw panels, woven bamboo, or synthetic shade nets of 70–90% depending on light intensity. In KG’s bright winters, 70–80% may suffice; monitor leaf color and new shoot growth.
  • Uniformity: Ensure even shading across the block to avoid mixed quality leaves. Keep shade structures high enough to allow air flow and reduce humidity buildup that can increase disease risk.

Irrigation and Nutrition

Consistent moisture is critical during shading and flushes. Use drip or micro‑sprinkler systems to avoid leaf wetting and conserve water in dry months.

  • Nitrogen: Moderate N applications increase leaf tenderness. Prefer split applications as foliage develops; organic sources (compost, well‑composted farmyard manure) improve soil structure.
  • Micronutrients: Zinc, boron and magnesium are important for leaf quality. Correct deficiencies based on leaf tests rather than blanket dosing.
  • Soil health: Regular addition of organic matter and cover crops reduces pest pressure and improves root health.

Pruning and Training

Regular pruning keeps the bush compact and promotes frequent, even flushes. For tencha production:

  • Carry out rejuvenation pruning if plants become woody; young growth is preferred for tencha.
  • Light annual pruning after major harvests maintains a height suitable for hand plucking.

Plucking Standards and Timing

Quality hinges on picking the right leaf. For tencha use the top bud plus one or two leaves, picked only while still tender. Harvest in the morning after dew evaporates but before midday heat to limit enzymatic changes.

Pest and Disease Management

Common issues in KG include mites, aphids, blister blight and root rot under poor drainage. Adopt integrated pest management (IPM):

  • Monitoring: Inspect weekly for early signs—webbing (mites), sticky honeydew (aphids), spots on young leaves (blister blight).
  • Cultural controls: Remove heavily infested shoots, keep plant density moderate to improve airflow, avoid overhead irrigation which promotes leaf diseases.
  • Biologicals: Encourage predatory mites and ladybirds; use neem oil or botanical extracts for minor aphid pressures.
  • Chemical options: Reserve selective pesticides for outbreaks and rotate modes of action. Always observe maximum residue limits if selling for matcha, and maintain pre‑harvest intervals. If you plan on direct assembling into matcha, low‑residue or organic routes are commercially attractive.

On-Farm Processing: From Leaf to Tencha

Tencha production differs from orthodox green tea—focus is on preventing oxidation and producing steamed (or sometimes pan‑fired) leaves that are then deveined and dried without rolling.

  • Withering: Keep brief; tencha needs minimal wither.
  • Fixation (shading stage termination): In Japan tencha is steamed to halt oxidation. Steaming time must be controlled—oversteaming darkens color; under‑steaming allows oxidation. Small scale farms can use a steam blancher or hot water/steam chamber.
  • Cooling and rolling: For tencha you do not roll into orthodox shapes. Instead, cool after steaming and dry gently to reduce moisture to storage levels.
  • De‑stem and de‑vein: Critical step—remove stems and midribs to produce pure leaf (tencha). This can be done by hand for micro batches or by sieving/roller methods for larger batches.
  • Milling to matcha: Tencha must be stone‑milled to produce fine matcha powder. This is typically done off‑farm by specialised mills; ensure moisture and storage standards before shipment.

Quality Control and Storage

Keep tencha cool, dry and away from odours. Rapid cooling post‑drying and storing under low humidity preserves color and aroma. For matcha milling, the tencha should be low moisture and free from stem fragments.

Marketing and Profit Tips

Tencha/matcha commands a premium but requires consistent quality and traceability.

  • Niche positioning: Decide whether you target specialty roasters, local tea blenders, culinary markets or direct consumer matcha. Each has different quality specs and volumes.
  • Small batches: Start with small, consistent batches and document your shading, harvest and processing methods—buyers of specialty matcha look for reproducibility.
  • Value chain partners: Partner with a reputable stone‑milling operation. Many farms cannot justify the cost of a stone mill, so trade or co‑operative milling is common.
  • Certifications: Organic or residue‑tested produce can fetch higher prices; evaluate the cost and market access before committing.
  • On‑farm experiences: Consider agri‑tourism or workshops on matcha tasting and culinary uses to add revenue and build direct customers.

Scaling and Economics

Start small and refine your shading, plucking and processing. Tencha quality improvements often come from small changes (uniform shade, careful plucking, clean de‑stemming) rather than simply expanding acreage. Keep good records of inputs, yields and price achieved per batch so you can assess profitability before scaling.

  • Source disease‑free planting material suited to shaded green tea.
  • Set up shade structures that provide uniform 70–90% light reduction and good airflow.
  • Plan irrigation and soil amendments focused on steady moisture and organic matter.
  • Train staff in precise plucking standards and quick handling after harvest.
  • Identify a milling partner and test small lots to calibrate steaming and drying parameters.

Producing tencha in Krishna Godavari is feasible with careful attention to shade, leaf handling and disease control. Begin with a pilot block, refine your process and build relationships with processors or buyers to capture the value that matcha markets can deliver.
