Why Jammu & Kashmir can grow tencha

Tencha is the shaded leaf material used to make matcha. It needs cool temperatures, steady humidity and careful shade management—conditions found in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, especially in cool-temperate valleys at moderate elevations. With the right cultivar, shade setup and processing, smallholders and estate growers can produce high-quality tencha suited for local and niche markets.

Site selection and climate

  • Elevation: Tencha-producing tea typically prefers cooler, well-drained sites. In Jammu & Kashmir, target foothill and mid-hill sites where frost risk is limited and cold periods are not prolonged.
  • Temperature: Cool, mild summers and cool nights help develop amino acids (umami) in shaded leaves. Avoid sites with extreme winter freezes or hot dry winds.

  • Shade percentage: Traditional Japanese tencha uses heavy shade—often 70–90% light reduction. In practice, adjust locally: start with 70% and monitor leaf tenderness and color.
  • Shade structures: Use woven mats, black polypropylene nets, or bamboo screens supported on poles. Ensure uniform shade and allow air movement to avoid fungal problems.
  • Progressive shading: Some growers implement partial shade first, then heavier shade in the final 2–3 weeks to balance growth and leaf quality.

Fertilization and water

  • Maintain steady nutrition—nitrogen promotes leaf tenderness and is central for tencha quality. Apply split doses of nitrogen during flush development rather than a single heavy dose.
  • Base fertilizer decisions on soil testing where possible. Use organic manures and compost to maintain microbial activity and structure.
  • Ensure consistent soil moisture; shaded plants respire differently and water stress can reduce leaf quality. Drip or sprinkler irrigation helps in dry periods.

Pruning and plucking

  • Formative pruning after establishment shapes the bush for regular plucking. Keep the plucking table low to facilitate hand-plucking of the topmost tender shoots.

Processing differentiates tencha from standard green tea. Basic on-farm steps:

  • Cooling and destemming: After steaming, cool and then remove stems and veins (de-veining). Tencha is made from only the leaf lamina.

  • Milling: Tencha is stored as dried leaf; matcha is produced by finely grinding tencha in a mill (stone grinding preferred for traditional matcha). If you plan to sell tencha, local or regional mills can process to matcha-grade powder.

  • Shade can increase humidity and the risk of fungal issues—monitor for blight, anthracnose and other leaf diseases. Ensure good airflow under shade structures and remove infected material promptly.
  • Common tea pests such as mites and tea tortrix can affect shaded crops—integrated pest management (IPM) with regular scouting, biological controls and targeted sprays is the best approach.
  • Use pesticides judiciously, focusing on pre-harvest intervals and residue limits if you target premium or export markets.

Quality control and market tips

  • Consistent shade, harvest timing and processing produce predictable leaf chemistry and flavor. Keep records of shading duration, fertilizer, and harvest dates for each block.
  • Small-batch processing and careful destemming improve quality but increase costs. Evaluate whether to sell tencha as leaf or invest in grinding to matcha depending on market demand.
  • Consider organic certification or a specialty brand focusing on Jammu & Kashmir provenance—quality niche markets reward traceability and clear production practices.

Practical risks and recommendations

  • Start small: trial a few rows to establish best shading percentage, cultivar performance, and processing workflow before scaling up.
  • Invest in postharvest handling: timing between harvest and steaming is crucial. A mobile or nearby steaming facility reduces quality loss.
  • Train harvest crews on uniform plucking and gentle handling—mechanical harvesters are generally unsuitable for tencha-grade leaf.
