  • Incorporate FYM or compost at planting (10–20 t/ha) to build soil organic matter and improve moisture retention.
  • Apply a balanced NPK split: many growers use low-to-moderate nitrogen and adequate potassium; tailor rates to soil fertility. Avoid high nitrogen late in the season to prevent excessive vine growth at the expense of tubers.
  • Micronutrients such as zinc and boron may be needed on deficient soils; foliar sprays can correct early deficiency symptoms.

Irrigation and moisture management

Sweet potato tolerates short dry spells but needs consistent moisture during root initiation and enlargement.

  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Over-irrigation increases rot and pest risk.
  • Drip irrigation or the use of polythene mulch helps conserve moisture and control weeds.
  • Reduce watering towards the end of tuber bulking to toughen skins before harvest.

Weed, intercrop and agronomic practices

  • Weed control is critical during first 4–6 weeks. Manual weeding, shallow hoeing, or mulching will help.
  • Intercropping with short-duration legumes (cowpea, groundnut) can be done early, but avoid competition during tuber bulking.
  • Earthing up/ridge maintenance: maintain ridges to keep tubers covered and to limit sunscald.

Pests and diseases — practical control

Field hygiene and monitoring are the most effective tools. Avoid repeated monoculture and remove infected plants.

  • Sweet potato weevil: Most damaging pest. Reduce by using certified clean slips, crop rotation, removing volunteer plants, and timely harvest. Trap and sanitation measures help; avoid leaving vines in field.
  • White grubs and wireworms: Damage young roots. Prevent by deep ploughing before planting and avoid planting in historically infested fields; hand removal of clods at planting reduces larvae.
  • Fungal diseases (leaf spots, stem/root rots): Avoid waterlogging, ensure good drainage, and use healthy planting material. Remove and burn badly infected residues. Fungicide use should be based on extension advice and labels.
  • Viral diseases: Lead to vine decline and yield loss. Control through clean nursery hygiene, rouging infected plants, and using resistant/tolerant material where available.

Harvesting and post-harvest handling

Harvest when tubers reach desired size; typical maturity ranges from 90 to 150 days depending on variety and market. Signs include reduced vine vigour and leaf yellowing.

  • Harvest carefully to avoid skin damage — bruises and cuts increase rot risk. Use a fork or hand digger to lift roots, keeping tools away from tubers.
  • Do not wash tubers; gently brush off excess soil and allow to cure by keeping in a shaded, ventilated area for 3–7 days to heal minor injuries and toughen skins.
  • For longer storage (weeks to months), store at cool, humid, ventilated conditions (avoid refrigeration). Monitor regularly and remove decayed tubers to prevent spread.

  • Sorting and grading by size and variety — uniform lots fetch better prices.
  • Washing and drying only if buyer demands it; otherwise sell with clean soil to extend shelf life.
  • Coordinate harvest timing to supply festivals or lean supply windows when prices rise.
  • Bulk sales through farmer groups/co-operatives reduce transaction costs and improve bargaining power.
