  • Days to maturity: early (90–110 days), medium (110–140), or late (>140) depending on your season length.
  • Root shape and skin/flesh color: match buyer preferences (white, orange, purple flesh).
  • Disease resistance: look for varieties with tolerance to soil rot, sweet potato virus diseases and weevil pressure.

Harvest at recommended maturity for your variety—early harvests give small roots, late harvests risk quality loss and pest attack. Indicators of maturity include leaf yellowing and full root size.

  • Lift roots carefully with a fork or lifter to avoid cuts and bruises—damaged roots store poorly and lose market value.

  • Value-add: consider simple processing (cleaning, cutting, drying) or producing slips for sale to other growers.

Crop rotation and sustainability

Rotate sweet potato with non-host crops (legumes, cereals) to reduce pest and disease build-up. Maintain soil organic matter and monitor fertility to sustain yields over seasons.
